First, are there any rigging diagrams available? The photos of the Kure model posted earlier in this thread are excellent, but it's difficult to "zoom out" and get an overall sense of things.

Second, the kit provides flags for the bow, stern, and mast. Per the kit, the bow and stern flags were flown when the ship was at anchor whereas the flags at the mast were flown while underway or in battle. Is that correct? Would flags have been flown at the bow and stern at the same time? And which of the two flags and pennant provided for the mast would have been flown at the same time? Any combination of the three or are they situation and/or time frame specific?
I have got some large photos I took personally when I was there in November. Took them on a Canon EOS 6D. The files are just over 3MB and are 5472 x 3648 pixels. PM me with some sort of email address as I can send them from my online storage.[/quote]

Is their anyway I could also get the files sent to me too? I have been looking for highly detailed images of rigging for quite awhile now. Just can't find any good clear shots.

I can PM you my email address.

Jim[/quote]

Sure just PM me and I will link all the files I have saved in my One Drive online storage.

The rigging look complex. If you can picture the rigging of the Bismarck how there is a single cable with a separator that divides it into a double cable then Yamato has the same in certain areas. I think it is easy to do if you have some good PE secured to the model to anchor the rigging to.

That museum is really impressive if anyone gets the chance to visit Japan it is well worth a visit. They had dozens of immaculate IJN warships modelled in glass cabinets complete with rigging.

I think there may be a problem with the PM system. I just noticed today my message to you through the PM system is still in outbox. If you did not find the photos link check your junk mail folder. I did send them.

If anyone else is trying to PM me please post a message here as I am getting messages into my email account saying I have private messages but none are showing up.

Make sure your inbox isn't full - it can only take 75 messages, read and unread.

Sent mail "remains" in your outbox until it is read by the recipient.

He's a new member and cannot send PMs until the first three posts on the forum are approved, which is why you did not see his PM. You will have to continue your communications through email.

Thanks that explains it. I got the email address in the last one and sent links to the photos I have uploaded onto my online storage. He will need to check his junk folder.

While we are on the topic is there any way I can get photos to display on the threads that is not too time consuming and does not overload peoples systems trying to download.

You can't have all three - you can optimize for minimal time on your end (posting just the link), for minimizing stress on the viewer's system (either just the link or use the time-consuming attachment tool), or for viewer's ease of display (either time-consuming attachment tool or stress viewer's system by using the [img] tags on a link).

Thank you baseballbrat.

Fantastic CGI, only wish there was more of it.

Of course, being the curmudgeon that I am, I will point out a few obvious flaws:

a. No sailors seen on decks detracts from realism;
b. IJN and USN ships are shows WAYYYY too close to each other in formation;
c. Yamato FULLY capsized before exploding - geez, would a couple more seconds of her rolling over have busted the budget?

Now I'll have to make the same comment on youtube

What I really liked about it was the video tour of the 1/10 model at the museum. You see greater detail with video comparing it with flat photo images.

A complete HD walk around of the Yamato Hiroba would be something impressive to see. Only short and wide angle videos on youtube are the only ones I can find.

Affordably, yes. Otherwise, Model Factory Hiro makes a cutaway multimedia full hull Yamato for $360: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10203313

Tomy/Takara also did a 14-piece crossection, but it's not a kit: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10041438

The CGI is good, but having played a bit in both the "World of Warships" and "World of Tanks," they both have a HUGE way to go before they are anything but high-priced children's toys.

I tend to prefer simulation to outright "game."

For example, in one of the scenes you see USN DDs trying to "mob" the Yamato, and they just sail right into her (bouncing off in the process), shooting at ranges of 0meters.

That isn't going to happen IRL.

The Yamato's Secondary Battery would have destroyed the DDs before they could get that close, for one.

And for another, the DDs that actually hit the Yamato would have crumpled like tissue paper ("Wouldn't have done the Yamato any good, either," to paraphrase James Gardner from "Support your Local Sheriff").

They are fun games to watch the CGI, but I would rather have a game where I actually have to sail the ship, and plot the gunfire accurately. I suppose, though, that this is a bit more math than most people are comfortable with.

I found the same problem.

The reason for these issues is that the CGI you see here is from Wargame.net's game World of Warships, where the scales are exaggerated so that players can actually see what they are shooting at (they have an ocean/ground scale of something like 1" = 100 yards).

We have to do basically the same thing with miniature wargaming (unless you have 1/6000 ships, where 1 mile is roughly equal to a foot (.88feet), so that you can get an "in-scale" game on a 16'x16' play area. I have seen some gamers do this. My dream is to do it in 1/700 scale, but I don't have any soccer/football pitches I could use for even a close-quarters night battle).

Oh, and they don't put any crew in, because animating a single person uses up the same computational energy as animating the entire ship.

The first video was the main theme of my original post. This IMO is the best video walk around of the Yamato Hiroba in Kure to date. Lots of close in shots and lots of information given by IJN Experts. It's a good overview of Yamato.

Throwing in a gaming video too was just an afterthought.

Doug Hallet wrote:Musashi's survivors were lucky only in the short run. The majority of them (at least 500) were dropped off in Manila during the retreat from Leyte and were incorporated into the Naval base commander's forces as infantry. When the Army commander retreated into the Luzon jungles to fight a delaying action that lasted the rest of the war, the naval commander decided to stage a last-ditch defense of Manila, causing thousands of civilian casualties including a number of atrocities. The Japanese force, including all the Musashi survivors, were killed almost to the last man.
Of interest was the the naval commander (31st Base Force) at Manila was RADM Iwabuchi Sanji, who had been CO of Kirishima when she was lost. The few survivors of Manila reportedly stated that Iwabuchi chose to make a final stand in Manila in order to atone for his loss of Kirishima.

Is there a site that shows the configurations of the yamato and musashi in different time periods? For example when exactly was the deck stained black, etc...

Yes, but it is in Japanese and therefore beyond the reach of Google search. I used to have it linked on my website, but eventually the address changed. I have the diagrams somewhere, but not on this laptop so I can't upload it right now.

I am 99% certain that the various diagrams showing the different configurations have been uploaded to this thread years ago. You will need to scroll through the pages showing the postings after August 2008 to find them....
