Probably gonna pose couple of dumb questions: but those stanchions, what's the purpose of them? And secondly, the instructions don't mention where they should be applied, and I'm don't see it in your photos too, so where do you put them? But that's just me .

Awning stanchions! I saw them on the fret but have never considered their stowage! Another question answered.

Stanchions were used to support lines for awnings in hot, sunny weather, particularly in port. Another view, of Musashi's forecastle deck

The work continues on the island.

Still more work to do, I decided to use styrene to do the AA guards as the kit ones are a bit oversized and the pontos sandbags interfere with them.
Most of the PE work is also done, the main focus on being on the frames of the open AA mounts, which had 15 parts per tube

Are you using any photographic reference for the sandbags around the AA Tubs? I can't recall seeing any photos of this.

In my opinion the pontos set is correct atleast to a point.
I can make a photoshop when I get home but ofcourse there's room for interpetation as the quality of the pictures taken from the US planes are what they are.

Still a marvellous build, I am mirroring it on another forum. Reminds me to read the instructions as I has put the foot rails on but forgotten the splinter shields in the form of the hammocks. I found the mast quite difficult. You are nearly there! Well done.

Greg, where are you blogging it? Since I'm working at the same one I'm always interested to see more of them ^^

Don't think that they were sandbags. Probably hammocks or something like that.

absolutely right indeed. And besides, you can never achieve 100% accuracy. But that's not the main thing as well. Having fun and getting a great result, that's what counts. I must say you are defo on your way doing that

I think I finished the island base for now!

There's still some guards etc. to ad after the painting because I only fit it to the hull after that but should be ok.
I made the rest of the guards at this stage. Like with scratching, keeping the shapes easy and using as many parts as needed everything went fine as couple of the guards had some elaborate shapes.

Also the handrails for the directors. The pontos ones that you can find in the set were too big so I cut exactly 1/4 out and reshaped them to a smaller circle and glued the end pieces together.

Perfect fit!

Also some more handrails were placed around, you could prolly go a bit more mad with these but I felt it was enough for me.

I skimmed through your thread and some pretty convincing progress!

I'd also would have liked to get some other sets as they seem to give some nice extra options for detailing, BUT, after shelling out over 600 $$$ for a ship model there is a line I have to draw!
Hats off for going in balls deep with all the extra though!

Hope to see some paint on it!

Pitty Greg don't post his build here, I checked out that forum but you have to register...

I have a lot to learn when it comes to painting to your standard! When it comes to going balls deep on PE, I suppose it's like being a little bit pregnant I suppose as to how far you go. I have been using some spares from previous yields as well.

One forum is enough as I started and completed a wooden endeavour on it and then went dark side to plastic doing a Varyag, Emden and Dreadnought (using Pontos). There are some beautiful wooden builds there in particular the scratch build ones.

Following this log is of enormous benefit to me, particularly the painting guide as I don't (yet) own an airbrush.
