Vlad,

The story revolves around a 28 year old nurse named Ayu who goes on a pilgrimage to find the son of crew mate who served with her grandfather aboard Musashi and is looking for answers about his service.

It's possible that her grandfather never wanted to talk about his service until he died and left her a letter that encouraged her to go on this journey. (I'm just guessing on this one)

I am taking a stab at this due to the translation is all over the place and other characters are intermingled in the storyline, which is very similar to the Men of Yamato. I rather doubt you will get any useful information about the ship, but a emotional rollercoaster ride of what it was like to serve in the IJN during WWII.

Anyone else want to take a stab at this?

More than likely this will be the TV movie version of Otokotachi no Yamato. Still, any movie about the IJN is worth watching at least once, IMHO.

Evaluation of Yamato as a WW2-era Weapon:

Post by bucketfoot-al »

A user going by the youtube nic "physcoredferret" posted a very insightful comment under one of the Yamato videos that I have up on youtube. I thought it might be of interest to reproduce it here:

"The Yamato certainly was not obsolete when she was launched. On the contrary, when she launched the standard US mark 13 aerial torpedo had a 270kg warhead which was quite insufficient to break through the Yamato's torpedo defence, in addition her deck armour was resistant to the 1000kg bombs of US bombers. Considering horizontal bombing against naval warships proved to be nearly useless, the Yamato was hence vulnerable only to 16"/45 Mk 6 and 16"/50 Mk 7 naval guns with either plunging fire at distances between 32-36km or within 18km.

Of course, the Yamato was still vulnerable at her bow and stern due to her All-or-nothing armour scheme and her very small citadel that extended only 55% of the ships length left much of her unarmoured. Numerous hits to these vulnerable points will greatly affect the Yamato's performance, although due to her massive reserve buoyancy it would be impossible to sink her without compromising the citadel itself.

In 1944, with the USN introduction of Torpex, US torpedoes had the explosive force necessary to buckle the Torpedo defences, however both Yamato and Musashi still took an extraordinary amount of ordnance to sink. Let us consider that the level of firepower both were subjected to was far beyond the capacity of any navy in 1941, and in Musashi's case the amount of damage she sustained allowed for the combined fleet to engage US carriers reletively unharmed (notwithstanding the strategic decisions of Halsey that allowed for it, or the atrocious performance of the combined fleet itself).

Often cited is the cost of the Yamato, which is often greatly exaggerated in comparison to the cost of a carrier. Shokaku alone ran up a higher cost then the Yamato, and this is not counting the cost of her air wing. The substitution of the Yamato for carriers also ignores the limited dockyards that the Japanese had available and the lack of natural harbours to construct more, while the expansion of existing slips was a viable alternative.

At best the Yamato could be substituted for two Unryuu sized carriers or a single carrier on the level of Taihou, whether this would have affected the outcome of the war is debatable as the Japanese were suffering from a lack of pilots and aircraft rather then a lack of carriers, resulting in the usage of it's remaining carriers as bait at Leyte Gulf. And most importantly the Yamatos themselves were necessary as a countermeasure to the very large and potent US battleship fleet.

Without the advantage of hindsight, there was little if any evidence that aircraft were a credible threat to capital ships. The Yamato's afforded the Japanese the cheapest means to counter US surface forces without investing in a large fleet of battleships or cruisers. Ultimately the Yamato was rendered useless by the failure of the IJN to utilise them until the war was already lost and air superiorty firmly in the hands of the Allies.

Now we can't determine how effective the Yamato would be if they were committed to the life and death struggle at Gaudacanal, if they were used as a Vanguard of IJN forces at Midway rather then the vulnerable carriers, or if they were utilised in a suicidal attack at the Marianas rather then Leyte. But ultimately hoarding them for a situation that never arose and then expending them in attacks which had no operational chance of success is not a fair means of determining their worth.

Much like the Maginot line, the Yamato is unfairly maligned by hindsighted arcmchair generals for failing to deliver victory for strategic reasons beyond its control."?

Just about to start tackling with the Tamiyas new tool Yamato, had a question if someone would like to give some insight.

The pontos set has those shields on the triple 25mm guns but looking at the Kure model not any of them seem to have them?
So looking for opinions if I should just cut the shields off and go without them?

Here's one of them assembled with the shields on:

Cheers

Edit:

Here's a comparison with a finished triple 25mm gun without the shields and mounted in it's base.

Can't help you on the issue, but glad to see someone starting to tackle the Pontos upgrade. Got the same and though I started my build not yet up to the guns by far.

The Kure model changes periodically, so it depends on what era you're trying to depict. If you want to depict your project to reflect the Kure display then omit the shields. IMO, I would do some research and decide what era looks best before building, so you're not having to mess with adding PE parts and then taking them off. Those parts are small enough as they are with out having to mess with them more then necessary.

If you can please keep us all updated and if possible show your assembly of these guns. so we all have an idea on how they go together.

Since I'm using that Pontos set as well: I'm trying to depict Yamato during her last voyage. Since the Kure one isn't depecting Yamato at that timeframe (or so I assume, looking at the still apparant tower at the aft crane), would the shields be omitted during Ten Ichi Go as well? Tamiya's booklet shows drawing with them not there as well, but have to be sure.

Thanks for posting physcoredferret's comments, which I am quoting above. However, I do have a few thoughts about his comments.

First of all, being obsolete and being vulnerable are not necessarily the same thing. Battleships were actually the least vulnerable ships of WW2, but they were still obsolete. Something to think about...

Secondly, I am very surprised to hear that the Shokaku cost more than the Yamato, and I must confess that I don't believe it. Of course, I could easily be wrong, but does anyone know what the costs were (and what sources were used to get those costs)? Do the costs quoted (if anyone has them) also include additional infrastructure required? For example, do the costs for the Yamato also include the special ship built just to transport the 18.1" guns and turrets, etc?

Anyway, just a few thoughts...

They are a bit time consuming to build but there's not really any challenges other than they are pretty small. They all fit nicely and all the small parts (seats etc.) have little cut outs to fit them into.

Hi Gentlemen,

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the Yamato and the Musashi. To my judgement I can't tell the difference between the two battleships.

I bought the new tool 1/700 Musashi and Flyhawk 1/700 IJN Yamato set.

Hi guys,

I asked the question above about both both ships.

I am going to build Musashi just before her final voyage and I got confused with all the info.

I just posted the link that will help outline the differences on my last post above yours. As for the detail set you got, you'll probably get around 70% parts overlap. There are some key differences between the 2 ships

Hi All,

Just wondering what detail kit would be best for the 1/200 Nichimo Yamato.

I have had this kit for a while and have decided that its time to break it out after doing numerous planes and dioramas its time to have a crack at a big one.

I have the english instructions (thankfully) and Janus' book on the Yamato with the drawings which is amazing.
Thanks.

I think the only PE detail set available at this time is from GMM...
I think there is a couple makers for barrels but unfortunately youre out of luck when it comes to
variety. Just be prepared for many inaccuracies if you plan to focus on historical correctness. Good Luck on your build!
