Thought I'd share these here, I'm just going to put them up as links, as they're bigger than I should post in a thread. So, here we go - first, a few profiles from one of the rather interesting guys over at Shipbucket:

Reference source - USNI Proceedings article June 1979 "Warships Should Look Warlike" by Lt. John C. Roach USNR and Herbert A. Meier

Two examples of the RCA study on the OHP for reconstruction.

I think they look pretty damn interesting, and I do find myself thinking of the Warlike Spruance and OHP, and going for broke and doing it to a Ticon as well - might go a distance to fixing the ugly box that is the structure.

Simon interesting stuff. The refits are so extensive that the ships cannot be recognised as Spruance and Perry class. :wave_1:

You can build like that in 1/350 what are you talking about? You just have to think a little more on some of the details in some places.

Hell, if I were a rich, eccentric bazillioniaire, you're damn skippy I would Whif in as big of a scale as I could get. What's that you say? Whiffed Zipang Yamato at 1/144? Tirpitzski 1/144? DAMN SKIPPY I WOULD!!!! I'd do it with a fracking grin the size of the San Andreas Fault too!

Aside - yeah, those are some interesting contrary design studies, and it's true, you can barely recognize the resemblance, especially in some cases, but I so want to do it, because they'd actually look a whole lot more elegant than the hull + brick equation Perries and Sprucans and Ticons out there. Of course, I think I'd actually extend the hangar on the Warlike Spruance, or perhaps just the structure, but I'd give it more to fill over some of that massive expanse - DDH Spruance anybody?

Is it jut me or does that Sprunace reconstruction look like the Spanish 'Alvaro de Bazan' Frigates in the RCA drawings?

Thats what you get when you build cheap-both the Sprucans and Perrys were supposed to be cheap warships.

ASFC, that's an impressive fleet you have there, looks great!

Simon, those pictures are very interesting to say the least. I (and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one) would just love to see one of those whifs built.

Guys, in a moment...I'll have a little treat for you today - just gotta upload some pictures first...

ASFC, you're right - I sat and looked at the two of them, they do look very similar, though the RCA Spruance has an enclosed mast, one CIWS fore and aft around the bridge block, and a second main gun over the hangar block.

Heiko, you and me both on that aspect - they're quite interesting designs, both sets, though I admit, I find myself more enamored of the Warlike Spruance/Perry than I do the RCA versions. The RCA versions are more defensively focused, emphasizing minimal crew exposure during NBC conditions and more efficient washdown - rolled deck edges, sloped decks, they're meant to get hit and clean off quicker, to survive in such conditions more efficiently, and to such concepts.

I'll probably do the Tico I have with the Warlike modifications in some places - like stepping up the deck under the Mk-26 forward mount, stepping down the structure in places, modifying the stacks so they don't look so tanker-esque, and going from there. They go a long way towards changing the hull+brick=ship USN design equation on those boats.

I completely agree with you there, Simon. And I gotta say... a Tico-whif should look pretty amazing. Even though I do like the Ticos, there's just something about their design that was always damping my enthusiasm. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing you working on one of those.

Now, for the treat. I went to the annual Intermodellbau fair in Dortmund (20kms from where I live). It's supposed to be the biggest modeling fair in Europe. They had 8 halls filled with just about anything that you can imagine. No need to mention what I was looking forward to see the most. In the end, I was quite a bit disappointed because, even though there were plenty of ship of all sizes, there were only a very few modern ships. WWII ships still dominate the waters. Literally. Their indoor pool was filled with RC models of WWII ships, tankers, tugs, ... once again, no sign of any modern ship. So I didn't take too many pictures.

Anyway, here's a bit of a preview.

Image
One of a few very nice modern subs on display: U212 Class German sub

Image
I need to correct myself a little. There were some modern ships just like this one...believe or not, they're paper models.

Image
Here's a nice "little" whif: a fictional German (RC) CVN which they named the "Graf Zeppelin III". No doubt what hull the carrier is based on but the airwing is certainly interesting: Tornados, F35s, Eurofighters and NH90 helos. Like I said...Couldn't be more fictional than that.

Image
One of the smaller (non-RC) models: USS Midway in 1:800 displayed in a nice diorama. I love the idea with the two Tomcats flying over it.

and yes, here comes my favorite...
Image
A 1:175 RC model of the Big E. Speaks for itself. Comes with all sorts of gadgets...moving radars, helo sounds, movable elevators, etc. Too bad it was just on static display.

I uploaded details pics and all of the other pics that are of interest to the thread somewhere else so that I won't flood the thread. For those of you who are interested... one click here please http://s575.photobucket.com/albums/ss19 ... odellbau09

Enjoy!

Just toured your whole gallery for the show, Heiko - bloody cool pictures in there. Beautiful stuff all told. Some really nicely executed models in there, and I love that Graf Zepplin III build, really quite an interesting piece for certain.

I think what damps the opinions of a number of us regarding USN warships, is that tall, flat superstructure, they're just so... blunt, and tall, and they lose something in the execution in that style. The box-like design of them is what cuts them short. So I'm going to step the deck, maybe expand the hangar section back so as to avoid that long flat section of decking. It would also make up for some of the missing internal space, extending the structure, along with the stepped design up front to break up that blocky frontage.

That HMV Tico looks stunning, as a designer and a builder, I must say that that is the most superb rendering of that kit I have seen. Really, really gorgeous. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: Loved all the other photos too, thanks for the effort!

Mathew i was thinking that it looked like a hybrid between spruance and Arleigh Burke.

The Sprucans were very good ship designs don t forget that their design was the basis for Kidd and Ticonderoga classes. :wave_1:

Well of course Nektarios :cool_2: . Cheap does not necessarily equal rubbish (although it can and does in many cases! :heh: ).

Love the photos Orb, expecially the 212. That is one sweet looking sub.

My Delta III is finished. The display stand is temporary so i m not doing much on it. I ll mount all my subs on bases with display stands. I ll make three different bases. One for JMSDF subs one for Western subs and one for Soviet/Russian ones.

Here are some photos

Orb, thanks for posting the show pics. I think I am finally finished with my first CVN, except my wife mentioned that it should have some crew rather than being a ghost ship. Has any one used the 1/700 Eduard Ship Photo Etch Aircraft Carrier Figures (Painted)?

Soon I will start on the LHD 7 USS Iwo Jima. I already have the decals from Starfighter and the AV-8Bs, AH-1s, UH-1 from WEM. Next I will need to get some CH46s and CH53s and the PE. First I need to figure out the flight deck arrangement.
