I am curious about your method for producing the brass photoetch parts - maybe you have explained it earlier but I didn't see it. You say you use TurboCAD? Have you constructed a 3D CAD model to work from, or are you drawing up the 2D photoetch patterns based upon photos and drawings?

However you are doing it the results are excellent!

I do not have a 3d of the Bismarck.
I have turbo-cad 2 D. (3 D possibilities.)

I scan or cold draw and get the measurements for each item where I can.
I make lots of mistakes!!!!
Photos for detail etc.
Raster to vector conversion and on you go.
I am still a learner though.
I sent in a file last Wednesday and had not scaled it properly.
The etch folk saw the mistake and corrected it.
I had the etch on Friday ...............

G'day Phil,
The HMS Hood here in Adelaide is actually scratchbuilt plank on frame hull. Her builder who is retired actually took bits of her with him 2 work on during his annual winter caravan holiday up round Broome!! Apparently he has been working on secondary wpns and superstructure bits!!
I think Alan P still has his original 1/72 scale Hood at his place in Sydney ( I will have 2 ask him next time I e-mail him)

I love this build and have been a fan since you started.

You mentioned in an earlier post that the hulls have been reduced in price, can you let me know how to get hold of one, please?

Amazing work on the turrets so far Kiwimedic. I am a machinist and would love to see how you plan to do the guns. truely amazing work.

I would also love to get a hold of one of these hulls as well as Bismarck is by far my favorite ship and would love to do one of these builds as well. I tried emailing Paul about getting one but got a auto response saying "Hello, I am unavailable to read your message at this time." so Im not sure if hes on vacation or just real busy at the moment

Sirmar are no longer in business and the business is for sale, apprently. Paul is just completing back orders at present.

There has been much confusion and consternation with Sirmar over the past year, this side of the pond especially. Many modellers have expressed dissatisfaction.

Were Sirmar producing and selling the 1:72 BISMARCK hulls?

That sounds like bad news. I really hope I didn't miss the boat to get one of these hulls. I had talked with Paul before about getting one but ended up having to back out because of a job loss. Now that the job situation is stable I hope I can still get one.

Hello All
I have been busy sorting things out as far as my mold is concerned.

The mold is mine and I was using Paul to produce and sell the hulls for me as I did not want to be involved.
I have been involved in selling to the public in the past and have had the like of a phone call at 02:30 in the morning with an irate customer saying
he did not like the colour of the gell-coat and was not going to pay full price etc.
This sort of thing I am not prepared to put up with.
I am not offering the hulls for sale at present, nor any fittings or superstructure or photo etch but will consider it in a few months time.
I will be offering hulls and some etch then.

Hello All

Ships Boats
I have been putting the masters together for ships boats.
there is one missing from the photo. (Paint wet!)
I will attach the keels and rubbing strakes and then mold them up.
They will be hollow inside so I may get one running!

Hi Phil been away for about 5 days and just picked up on your boats. Seeing them at the Boat Convention reminds me on how large they are at 1:72. Great job .Will you be moulding the superstructures or just the hulls ?

I am not sure as yet.
I may put a framework together and mould it up and attach the wood to that.
The topside of the boat is mainly varnished Mahogany/walnut or Teak so I will be looking to get that looking right.
It may be easier to to fabricate framing in the correct coloured wood and be done with it.
I will know when the hulls are done
They are proper models by themselves.
As you know a model warship is a combination of many models.

Phil,

it is a landmark in itself to be able to move on to the smaller items on the build. As with everything else before, the ships boats have quality appearance. I feel sure that you will manufacture the upperworks in wood etc., in line with the superb attention to detail that has gone beforehand.

Do you have facilities indoors to do the smaller items? It is a godsend in the winter months to be able to create accessories in the warmth and comfort of a well lit and heated room.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the progress report.

Small boats look great so far. Thanks for letting us know the situation with the hull/etching Phil. It's just great to know its still a possibility for me to do a build like this in the future.

6oo mm + snow here
Just a quick update.
Unfortunately it has been an Anubis horribus.
All that is over so it can only get better.

I have not done anything to my ship in the last 3 months.
I will begin again on Friday.
The masters are complete.
I have molded up the admirals pinnaces and have produced the hulls.
I will do the Verks boats on Friday.

Hi Phil,

I have a question that's been bugging me for a while. Seeing as the superstructure is all brass (I'm assuming the guns are going to be too).In combination of the superstructure weight and the weight of the ballast to keep the ship level and keep from capsizing. Will the ship still sit at the water line when finished?
