It;s difficult to say exactly what's going on here as far as markings go. That clip is actually part of a movie filmed on board Zuikaku in late summer 1944 called "Torpedo Squadrons Move Out". It was filmed during training on the Inland Sea.

While it appears that the flight deck may have been camouflaged at this point, it is not clear that those markings were anything other then temporary for training. I say that because the overheads taken of Zuikaku two to three months later that year at Cape Engano show only a single dotted line down the center. The other point worth noting is that filming may have occurred at different intervals with some time between them, and that the markings could have changed as well. There appear to be continuity issues with the film, or at least, that's how it appears to me.

So, you have to decide when you wish to model her.

basically, it's the "deluxe edition (DX)" (huge amount of photoetch ! cool !) with deck painting masks added (nice goodie, as this deck has a complex geometrical camo pattern).

Hi guys,
I finally decided to buy myself a full-hull Fujimi Shokaku in 1/700 and the kit is really outstanding, but one thing surprised me. It lacks anchor chains on the bow deck! Is it just a flaw of my kit, or a weird idea of guys from Fujimi?
It's weird to see that there are so many tiny and fine details done on the kit, but not even the simplest imitation of anchor chains...

Hmmm....I just went back to my review notes and it appears that no anchor chain is correct, just the chaffing plates. I suspect a lot of folks would welcome that, so as to add PE versions.

There are several releases of the Fujimi 1/350 Zuikaku, I'm a bit confused.

Far as I can tell, there's the standard kit, A DX version & a Premium version. I'm guessin' the DX & Premium both have etch in the box, but i'm not sure what, or even if any?

Any help appreciated, before i buy the wrong version.

Well, I don't think you're alone. Fujimi is not shy about variation proliferation. I see:

What's not shown (because they can't afford to stock it) is the Ultra-Super-Uber version, which has a platinum plated flight deck, titanium aircraft and solid gold propellers. I think it pops up on Ebay every now and then.

There are great kits and plenty of aftermarket stuff available for both, so that would depend mostly on which ship you like best. Colour schemes are very similar. If you want a late war camouflage pattern instead of grey, you could also choose Zuikaku.

I think Akagi makes for a more challenging and time-consuming build (more details and more complicated structure) than Shokaku though, especially if you include a lot of aftermarket stuff like PE.

Fujimi in 1/350 kit of Zuikaku indicates grey AA guns from 25mm to 127mm, and rocket launchers.

is that true ??

The mounts and shield would match whatever shade of camouflage (which could be green or gray) that particular area was painted in. The barrels were likely still gun metal grey.

I'm a former member who has been away so long that I couldn't remember my user name, so just created a new account. Making a return to modeling and have purchased the 350 Shokaku. I've read through this thread but some of the info regarding aftermarket is pretty dated and I'm finding a lot of things are OOP.

My questions:

Can I be reasonably confident that a wooden deck meant for Zuikaku is going to fit Shokaku?

As of Summer 2016, can anyone recommend a wooden deck? I've never used them. The adhesive ones by Artwox look like they'd be very easy to apply, but nothing I've found online really shows close detail and I'm wondering how realistic the actually look.

Yes

I can't speak to the adhesive quality of any of the decks. I have a Fujimi deck and it's planking is the same size as that of the plastic deck. Plus, it has the tie-down holes. Several modelers have built them with the Fujimi deck; maybe one can chime in on this.

I have examined the Artwox deck and I remember thinking that it's planking was better scaled. But, again, I haven't used one.
