I just saw on LuckyModel that Hasegawa have the 1/350 Akagi coming back, but it states 'new tooling'.....

Anyone know whats new, if anything? Price seems about the same. & the photo's look the same too.

Who makes the best 1/700 IJN Kaga? I have the Fujimi 1/700 IJN Akagi and I am close to completing the kit. So I would like to move on to the IJN Kaga.

Since Hasegawa has yet to retool its version, I'd have to say Fujimi. Not perfect, but certainly improved.

I'm drooling all over the place now for a 1:350 Hasegawa kit of the Akagi, though I have no idea if or when I'd ever finish it. I have a few ships already started now, and none of them are anywhere near finished.

Is anyone doing a build thread of the 1/350 Fujimi Kaga?

Has anyone purchased the Tetra detail set for this model and if so what are their thoughts on this set?

Well, they are not yet on the AKA website but, who knows the last time that was updated. Looks interesting, for sure.

Dan,

How hard would it be to backdate Akagi to January to November 1939 when she was supporting the landings on China's Hainan Island and Guangxi province?

Her TROM on combined fleet.com states that her air group consisted of Claude fighters, Susies and Jeans at the time.
30 January 1939:
Departs Sasebo for southern China. Her air group consists of 12 (+4 spares) A5M2 Claude, 18 (+5 spares) D1A2 Susie and 36 (+16 spares) B4Y1 Jean.
I don't see any overhauls or refits in her TROM in 1939 so far, but just wanted to make sure all I needed was a set of prewar IJN aircraft.

I'm thinking of using the old tool 1/700 Hasegawa kit. Do you think it's feasible?

Her modernization wasn't completed until Aug, 1938 so, I would imagine no changes in her appearance except for the addition of a degaussing cable in late 1941. If the Hasegawa kit has one, it will have to come off.

Not sure if there are aircraft for that period or not in 1/700. Hasegawa makes a set for its 1935 3 deck version.

I was going to build the 3 deck version of the Kaga from Fujimi (http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10291244) and wanted to make sure the airwings that are included are historically accurate. Can anyone help me? how many planes of each type were present during this time period? Thank you

I don't have quick access to my references tonight, so I googled Wikipedia, which cites the Hata book on Japanese Naval aces and units in WW2:

"As originally completed, Kaga carried an air group of 28 Mitsubishi B1M3 torpedo bombers, 16 Nakajima A1N fighters and 16 Mitsubishi 2MR reconnaissance aircraft.[7][Note 1]"

It sounds about right.

Thank you for this information. Do you happen to know if the Kaga had deck drains during this time period during at this time? There are very few references for this time period. Any books you recommend?

Well, certainly the middle deck had them. Not as obvious is the one attached to the upper deck. If you look carefully, you can see it's "casing" under the workmen standing on deck. Chances are that all the decks had them. Whether they completely ringed the decks or not is open to question. These look pretty narrow.

AFAIK, there was no one single book on Kaga until recently. Kagero has published one. See: http://www.j-aircraft.org/smf/index.php?topic=15931.0

Most of the photos are scattered through several Japanese publications, mostly in photo books originally authored by Shizuo Fukui.

Kaga had 3 8" guns on each side of the hull aft like in her modernization and had the two gun turrents at upper hangar level.
during modernization as we know the 4 8" guns in turrents were removed and put aft with the other 6 so there is now 5 guns on each side.
