Calling all Scharnhorst and Gneisenau fans!

The only 40-mm mounts that the Germans utilized in fact were single mounts. I don't know if they had any plans for multiple 40-mm gun mounts.

The Germans were developing a semi-DP 128-mm gun mounts for destroyers (Type 42B&C) and I thought it was planned for use on "planned" future heavy units as well. A DP 128-mm mount would have been a far better choice than the 5.9-in mounts. Also, plans were to use 30-mm guns in place of the 20-mm guns and 55-mm guns in place of the 37-mm guns on the Type 42B&C destroyers.

The use of 40-mm guns (Bofors design) was sort of a stop-gap exercise by the Germans. What GNEISENAU may have ended up with if the Germans had completed rebuilding her, likely would have evolved based on what was available when she completed. I suspect that the 105-mm guns would have remained. But, the use of 128-mm DP guns would have been an interesting "What-If".

You guys are making it too hard to say "no...I will complete my first 5 projects first before I do this..." So, could these single 40mm mounts be best represented by a WWII Bofors 40mm kit piece cut in half separating the two barrels?

The single 40-mm mounts looked close to the USN Mk 3 single 40-mm mounts, only the Germans had a shield for it and it appears to be more robust in construction. Some kits have the single 40-mm German version, but I figured that any of the aftermarket Mk 3 single 40-mm guns could be modified for the purpose.

Here are some images from PRINZ EUGEN after she became USN IX-300 and an USN Mk 3 40-mm on a submarine. There appears to be some variation in the shields construction.

69 years ago the Scharnhorst was sunk after the North Cape battle.

Lets remember that heroic crew ... and all the sailors ( both sides 1932 + 18 ) which lost their life on that battle.

Enjoy the print realized by a friend ( of course a Scharnhorst lover ) made after my personal researches made on her last camouflage.
The Scharnhorst last camo now is well known by everybody and used also on the box of Dragon 1/350 kit.

In order to celebrate this day, to maintain a promise I made to some german friends on another forum, and to honour the Scharnhorst heroic crew, tonight at 19.48 ( Scharnhorst sinking time ) I will upload the correct Scharnhorst Baltic camouflage both sides ( tarnschema )

Thanks everyone for all the data here and on other spots on the site. Helped greatly when flogging away on the 1/700 Tamiya Scharnhorst that I just finished. I put a build post with several pics in the Completed Works forum.

Just some further details re Bofors guns. Ironically it was Krupp (in Germany)that came up with the design of the Bofors 40mm in the 1920's but there was no call for it, so they sold the design to the Swedish Bofors company and the rest to use a clich�, is history.

The Kriegsmarine only ever had single Bofors guns and they were proper Bofors guns, just like the ones the RN and USN used only with their own shields. Prinz Eugen had about 17/18 of them in 1945 and off the top of my head a few were fitted to Lutzow, Admiral Scheer and Nurnberg (possibly a few destroyers too).

Again, off the top of my head Flyhawk do a set of etch ones in 1/700 but I'm not sure on other scales, as I only do 1/700!

Hello Stein: Another top notch model with a great presentation. A quick question about bow detail, your excellent model shows wood planking at the bow stopping between the anchor pockets. According to KM Naval Camo by Asmussen, the planking extended almost to the tip of the bow, at the time of the Norway operation. This was certainly true by the time of operation Juno two months later, but what did you base your decision to end the planking where you did? The Kagero monograph on Gneisinau shows the bow as you modeled it, at the time of operation Berlin in "41". This is probably incorrect. Again, great job, your projects always inspire. Have you heard that White Ensign is producing a 1/350 Koenigsburg?
