Indeed, with all those frames, it looks much better. What was the construction method then, carvel or diagonal-carvel?

And where did you get the drawings from, are the sources publicly accessible? I know that ib the Atlas du G�nie Maritime there are various drawings, but they are from around the middle of the 19th century. I am asking, because I a currently editing/writing a book on (German) naval boats from 1852 to 1918 and I have been contemplating a chapter on boats from other navies for comparison.

Not all launch boats are there. They are all the same in this link. The You-You is not there for example.

I have other plans of steam and motor boats.

I copied this site entirely with a software (Site Sucker) to save it, some time ago in case, it could disappear one day, the internet is very volatile.

There are German ships in another section, but less.

Thanks Hank! And I can use it for other projects.

Small but time-consuming advances, yesterday and today.

The floor follows the ribs, that's special " Footbraces " run through the ship so that the rowers can pull on the oars more efficiently. The holes serving as oarlock for the oars, are plugged when sailing to avoid taking water in there when the ship heels.

There is still some work to be done, foredeck, mizzen and mast roots etc... but the end of the design is not far off.

Toulon, very interesting pictures, especially the last ones, where we see the housing for the oars, replaced later, by steel oars or wooden tolets.

We can see the very specific, very short helm, because of the mizzen mast or "tape-cul". There had to be a system that the helmsman could apply enough force especially when sailing.

Yes, I noticed in the earlier batch of photos that one canot was clinker-built, which somewhat surprised me for the Mediterranean.

In the German navy of the time many of the larger ones were built with double-diagonal planking. Because of the intermediate layer of canvass, there were less problems with leaking. Otherwise, carvel-built boats in particular had to be kept humid, so that that the seams don't open (I remember the frustration, when the boatyard had not put our boat into the water in time for our arrival for the summer vacation - had to wait for a couple of days to swell tight ).

When comparing the French boats with the German ones, I noticed that their stems seem to have been more massive with wider deadwood. Also the curve from keel to stem is much tighter than on the German boats. Otherwise, the arrangements are quite similar - which is not terribly surprising, given the similar tasks.

I'm still looking for plans of the 11 mts oil boat (3 on board), the admiral, the commander and the officers, it's the only plan I'm missing with the one of the small boat (or pram). I will have to improvise a plan myself for the launch and the pram. I have the profile, that's not bad.















The small pram (3.5 mts) is used for anchoring and Bullivant nets, it is on a davit above the anchors on the roadstead.

Well, it's not too bad for a draft. I'll see it tomorrow with some hindsight for some minor corrections.

I'm quite happy with the result for a first one without couple plans.

I still have to draw the deck, the front and back cabins.

A real banana this launch boat, I had to draw curved "water lines" which are not curves anymore, but it works very well with Fusion, even better for smoothing, these lines being more perpendicular to the couples than the classic water lines.

I'm having fun with this " canot ". No plan and 2 pictures. It leaves some room to the imagination while respecting as much as possible the style of this kind of boat.

It seems that the scheme does not correspond exactly to the canot in photos, some details of form are different, for the "plan" aft transom higher, break of the keel line on the front.
This makes it nicer I think.

The line of this canoe is relatively modern for the time, it probably foreshadows the shapes of the canoes of the 30s, 40s and 50s.

I think that the name "Canot � p�trole" at the time includes all liquid fuels from the oil industry (petroleum etc..). Today it means rather crude oil in English.

The battleships of the "Bretagne" class have diesel reserves on the storage platform of the boats to fill the tanks of the canoes. I haven't drawn them yet.

Have to much admire the ability to produce a fair an smooth hull with your fusion 360. As you alluded, there is a wonderful joy in the old and traditional working methods, much of course is the challenges of divining techniques. Also with the pleasure of workmen with the hands, though at some point vision and dexterity bering to suffer with superannuation.

Indeed gasoline engines were a considerable danger in submarines, perhaps USN was a little slower in adopting these in the early days. The future fleet admiral Chester Nimitz was a leader in this effort. The very reliable engines used in WWII were developed in conjunction with the railroads with government funds subsidizing their implementation. A wonderful proving ground!

An enjoyable project to follow!

Drawings of the 2 cabins.

It's not totally finished, I still have a floor and stairs to draw, plus some small details.

I drew a vents, there may have been two (see photo), the front cabin houses the engine, these vents probably allowed the ventilation of the compartment and the air supply to the engine.

It does not seem to have glass windows on the back cabin.
