I'm curious about the size planking that you're using. Can you share your sizes and material supplier? I was looking at Kappler Mill & Lumber Company http://www.kapplerusa.com N Scale .013" x .019" x12", which come 10 to a pack for around $2.75 a pack.

Thanks for any info.

Hey Chuck

Youre going to have to pinpoint me those 2 range finders you are saying, I cant seem to find them Ive looked everywhere from the Yamato model at Kure, to the books I got home I just dont see them, on these 2 diagrams which comes from Skulskis book please draw them or better if you want post one your pics showing them. TIA

There must be something going on with my eyes I thought I saw 1 layer  :lol_pound: :lol_pound: , those pesky little things are a pain in the neck to scratch build :lol_4:

I just got those new binoculars and voice tubes from Veterans, quality is outstanding, here pictures speak louder than words
, I want to thank the people of WEM especially Ms. Carter, for doing such great service.

Let me go back to my Kure model picture collection and find a picture showing the range finders. They are illustrated on Gekkan books and Super Illustrated. In ATOS they were replaced with binoculars. As shown in ATOS, the two binoculars directly to the left and right of the base of the main 15m rangefinder occupies the location where the 2m open range finders should be as shown in the Kure model.

In ATOS there is a cross sectional diagram of the wind baffles in front of the 1st bridge windows, and it clearly shows the multiple layers of vanes in the baffle. I cheated in making these by just using 0.3X0.3mm styrene stripes to represent just the tops of the inside vanes.

About the Veteran model binoculars, I was thinking about getting them, but I thought they might have been overscaled to reflect the level of details they depicted. I already bought 4 of Hasagawa's accessory kits. Do you think those are scale accurate and are substantial and worthwhile improvements to Hasagawa's accessory kits?

Thanks Drazen!, the 1/350 scale portholes are from Tom's ModelWorks, I bought this porthole's P.E set more than 2 years ago I don't know if he still has it in production, probably he does if I was you I'd check his website . HTH

Chuck, I looked thru the Super Illustrated volume and it is referring to photos taken of various aircrews in the hangar wells aboard Yamato and Mushashi, not new photos within the hangar itself. 5 of those photos appear in the KMM/Diamond-Sha volume on the Yamato class, though not in Gakkens 11 or 20 as far as I can tell.

Unfortunately, it is exactly as the author states; the photos only confirm details about the hangar well and door as illustrated in the Super Illustrated volume, nothing more. On a separate note, if I comprehend the hangar well illustration correctly, it lookd like the door was hinged to open from either side. Can;t imagine why that would be necessary. FWIW.

I interpreted that to mean that the door was split into separate port and starboard halves. Each half opens outwards to its own sides, swinging on its own hinges and running on its own quarter circular track.

Using the Tamiya model as reference, it appears the aircraft well is actually quite small, an Aichi E13A Jake with wings folded would be a tight fit in that well. In fact, with Tamiya representation, there is no room to actually accommodate a protruding hinge for the hanger door.

Using Tamiya's imperfect scaling, it appears that separate doors can barely swing open if there is already an aircraft in the well. A single door would not be able to swing open if there is already an aircraft in the well.

I also wonder why there are no tread plates on the floor of the hanger well. No model or graphical representation depicts tread patterns there. Yet being a sunken well liable to contain sloshing water shipped during any rough sea, the floor of the well would be a more logical place to put tread patterns than many of the upper balconies on the tower bridge.

Split doors ..... duh! I didn't see the seam line.

Perhaps the doors must remain open while moving in or out of the hangar. Can't comment on the surface of the well bottom - don't recall anything in the ph0tos but I can look again.

I agree. I suspect the doors would not be closed with an aircraft in the well. The doors themselves look massive, and were probably water-tight and blast-tight when closed. In any case, sections of dolly track under the door must be dismantled before the doors can close.

Do you know of any photos showing the doors to the boat tubes on either side of the hull?

Hey Chuck

Got a question there this new Pit Road accessories set should be coming out next month , I know is more money to spend but if that actually is what Im thinking it is Ill buy it rather than scratch build it. My question is the one I circled does it look to you like the 2 meter Range Finder?

Chuck this link here might be useful to you, Im merely borrowing it from an Ebay seller, even though is a CGI book there is a pic that shows the planes hangar, check it out it might answer some of your questions or make you think about new ones

That looks to me like the small range finder usually found on the tops of the bridges of IJN destroyers, right in front of the gunnery director (Not the bigger range finder on top of DD directors). Notice there is a central box that encloses some equipment. Based on the pictures I think the 2 meter range finder on the top of Yamato's air defence platform doesn't have that box, and there also appears to be more exposed equipment under the range finder arm than could be accommodated in that box. But a 2 meter rangefinder in 1/350 is so small that I think it won't make too much difference.

I looked again but it appears that the hangar well floor is just smooth.

The boat tubes is a bit more nebulous. The Hara Shobo plan set & AOTS both show the tubes to be open (each parralleling an arm of the "Y" of hangar). Don't know if that's really true but, since they are protected from blast effects by the deck above, no reason why they couldn't be open.

I also have the photo volume on the KMM 1/10 scale Yamato and there are shots there that are not on the website showing the boat tube openings. However, the modelers have cheated because, while you can see the rear half of the boat on the trolley on rails, (pic is off the KMM website), that's all there is. In the closeup, there's only the rear halves of the boats and rails which stop at a generic grey wall.

There is a photo is the KMM Yamato volume taken on board Musashi in 1943, looking forward from one side of the a/c crane that shows the top of hangar well door & well starboard side, along with the top of the entrance portal to the boat tube. Also the starboard catapult. If I have a chance, I'll scan it it. Not as much detail as you want but, the portal arc differs from the Yamato model, IMHO.

Thanks, Dan. I was actually looking more for pictures of the boat hangers on either side of the hull, below the weather deck. I built a rudimentary boat hanger based on ATOS deck plans. But I would like to depict some details in the boat hanger, and leave the hanger doors open. Some details might be do the boats in the hanger sit on skegs or on dollies. Are there catwalks on the 2 story bulkeads around the boats. There were suppose to be life raft storage on the forward end of the boat hangers, what are these like.

There appears to be a row of extra-large (almost 3 scale feet across) portholes on Yamato's hull side. Deck plans shows that if these were indeed portholes, they would open onto the boat hangers. So I like to find out exactly what these big round depressions on the side of Yamato's hull actually is.

Unfortunately, there are no photos of this area save for the famous one of Yamato fitting out in Kure dock in late 1941. Sadly, the aperture is in shadow. THE KMM model has dealt nicely with the issue by depicting the doors shut.

I see the AOTS Skulski has drawn the inner side of the outer plating bulkhead as studded with vertical supports, in the manner of hangar deck sides on IJN CVs. I can't speak to details but I'm not certain that the hangars are a full two storeys. Clearly, the overhead gantry rail takes up some of the space. If I were to model it, I believe I would include would be some sort of track and trolley(s) along the deck, to take the weight of the boats and facilitate some movement in the event of repair, inspection, etc.

Space seems too narrow for a catwalk, though, in thinking about it, there should be some sort of acess to the gantry rail, so maybe a catwalk is possible. Can;t speak to life rafts.

Don't know about the apertures, though I see tht the KMM model has some interesting large openings for ventilation fans, though IIRC, these are located elsewhere. Again, FWIW.

Putting scale boats into the rudimentary hanger, there is definitely space for a catwalk. The reason why I suspect there actually would be a catwalk is simply this:

If there is no catwalk, that means a door leading to the inside of the ship would be at the floor level of the boat tube. Since it is quite likely that the boat tube, being so close to sea level, would ship water through the open door in normal service, it is reasonable to suppose that any door on the inside of the boat tube leading further into the ship would be placed at a higher level to prevent the water sloshing in the boat tube from entering the interior of the ship.

Also, it would be a good design practice from damage control point of view to put any large apertures on the side of the hull that leads into ship's interior as high above waterline as possible. This would delay flooding through damage to the watertight door should the ship list. The big boar tube door is pretty low down, and would become a major flooding point with the ship listing just a little bit. So I suspect the inside wall of the boat tube must be structural and designed to exclude water should the ship list enough to put a damaged boat-tube door underwater. To improve the protection this inside wall would afford, the hatches on this wall should be placed as high as possible. Hence again the need for a catwalk on the inside wall of the boat tube.

1944 IJN Musashi from a Tamiya Yamato

Post by ajkochev »

This is the 1:700 scale new tooling Yamato kit of course. I've built this kit, and I cannot say enough good things about it. As I was building it, I realized that it came with additional parts and one could build any version of the Yamato with this kit, it is just a matter of omitting or replacing certian parts.

I got looking at the large Musashi photo in this post viewtopic.php?f=2&t=35934 and I think that the Yamato kit could be used to create a 1944 Musashi. The only major issues I can see are I'd need two additional sheilded triple AA guns(this doesn't include the poor ones on the W frets) also I understand that the ladder on the rear of the bridge is one long one verses the staggered one on the Yamato.

Anything else one would need to alter?
