Read on SteelNavy that the bow portholes for CVN65 came from CV6. Anyone know what else from CV6 may be on CVN65? Just curious.

Can I get some ideas a to what color the flight deck should be. I tried flat black and realized its way to dark. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have noticed that the deck was a strange brown color in the early '60s. Whats up with that?

There's a magazine photo (bow on slightly elevated) showing the famous "tan flight deck" and those see-thru elevators taken during her sea trials or right after commissioning I think. I can't find it at the moment and Google is proving hopeless. I want to say it was some experimental color but don't quote me on it. Could of just been a base coat, primer, or just bad paint for all I know.

I had not heard the bow portholes were from CVN-6 when I was on there from 1996-1998. That doesn't mean it might not be true, I just don't recall hearing it. That location is secondary conn and I was responsible for manning it with my personnel from Deck Department including a qualified OOD during general quarters. The spring of 1996 we were in the Caribbean and he decided to open the portholes for some air - which was a very nice breeze until the first launch when the team got choked out by the exhaust from an F-18C that did the characteristic dip upon launch! Needless to say that watch team never opened the portholes again.

Gentlemen, I fear that I am searching for the holy grail in someways, but I am desperately trying to get hold of a set of GMMs 1/350 Lo-Viz East Coast Airwing decals as I have my heart set on building the Big E with the last Intruder flight, or are there any downloadable versions anywhere that I can make my own from?

Many of the items that Starfigher carries are printed only after you order them. As long as the item is current in the catalog, they can print them for you.

Good morning gentlemen,
I went onto the Starfighter website to order and it said that they were out of stock so I emailed Mark@starfighter-decals.com to find out when I could get some, so far no reply, I imagine that they get a lot emails so I'm not unhappy that I haven't had a reply yet, however, in trolling the net trying to find stock for Starfighter or Gold Medal, I managed to get two sets of Gold Medal East Coast decs from 'Creative Models' in Australia, and they seemed to have some left. I am waiting for an email from them at some point to say it's a mistake and there were none left for my order. That has happened a few times lately with these decals. So fingers crossed they're on their way.

A bit of history with my build, it's the Tamiya Big E, I bought it off e-bay several weeks back already built and painted many years ago, looked decent but I bought it based on the fact that there was an entire set of untouched sprues with it. The lad that built it had sprayed the original hull and deck sections with automotive paint with the inevitable styrene munching results! Undeterred he then went out and bought a second kit, expensive, but this effectively gave me a complete new kit if I stripped the model down which I have done.

I have used a product called 'MODELSTRIP' to remove the paint from the three deck sections leaving fresh clean plastic as though straight out the box. I will be doing the same to the hull this weekend.

In the meantime I have been collecting the aftermarket stuff I intend to use. So far I have:
WEM Enterprise ship/airwing and CVN anchor sets, Veterans ECM/CHAFF set, Trumpeter Intruders and Ray D. Beans photo CD(awesome).
I'm waiting for a lot more to arrive:
Trumpy Tomcats/Hornets/Prowlers/Hawkeyes/Vikings/Corsairs/Greyhounds/Seakings/Seahawks. GMMs Ship and Airwing decals/Elevator Plates. Tom's Liferaft racks/hose reels, Veterans Phalanx.

Having a credit card can be way too tempting at times!
And, thanks to your own Rob McCune, I hope to have a decent hangar deck too, excellent drawings and CAD work. I hope I do your efforts justice.
