Yeah, I probably will, when I can get my hands on one. I might strip it off my Kidd for now, I'm not sure. Technically, the 48's not Necessary - there have been SM operating ships, that have not had 3d search radar, but not in the US fleet.

Simon/Nektarios, AN/SPS-40 was actually replaced by AN/SPS-49 not the 48.

Yes, this is known, that the 49 replaced the 40, but Nektarios was pointing to the 48 for the 3d air search capacity, which is a standard fit (pardon pun) for the Standard Missile platforms. Most places the Standard is used, they often include a 3D air search radar to enhance the capacity.

Well standard practice was both 48 and 49, even the Kidd class ended up with that configuration, best you find another radar platform

Thanks for the kind word everyone, the next ship to join the fleet will be either the AFG3 LaSalle,, LPD14 Trenton, or the LSD37 Portland. I am leaning towards the Portland today, but that can always change.

I question that... Got a picture of a Kidd with the 48 AND the 49? Every picture I've seen, there's only the 18, on the Aft mast. Forward mast has SPG-60, SPS-55, SPQ-9, and a SPS-51 above the bridge. Aft mast has the SPS-48, SPG-51, and nothing else that remotely resembles SPS-49. 49's a dish-back radar with the transmitters set up on the bottom, contrary to the 40's top-mounted arm.

Indeed, old fart, much appreciated.

I hadn't seen any pictures of the NTU Kidds I guess - I just pulled up navsource not that long ago - it seems they replace the SPG-60 in the upgrade. Interesting to note, and I'll have to put an effort in to do that project, possibly when I do the Kidd I have in stash.

It is true that most warships intended for AAW have both SPS-48 and SPS-49. The question is if they would have to choose one of the two due to space limitations (OHP is a good example) which one would they choose ??? The OHP class are not an AAW ships although they carried an area defense missile. Mk-92 served as 3-D radar due to the lack of a dedicated 3-D radar.

Here s a what-if conversion of the LCS design.

I added a 32-cell VLS and replaced the 57mm gun with a 5-inch Mk-45 mod.4

Simon i feel that the LCS design is just too lightly armed for my taste.
