I used to do that often at shows (but diorama's and figure models, as this is my first ship model). But nowadays I get to visit less shows (small children...), so it happens less. I did one in Heiden recently though, about 1 month ago.
But if we meet at a show sometime, and there is some equipment lying around, we can of course always sit together!

Unfortunately not. But I went through the entire action report again, and also read reports from the escorting ships. These already provided more ideas than I could include in this diorama!

Yep, it is almost done. Meanwhile I have added three more small boats and two liferaft, which are a bit further away from the ships, and an aircraft foating on it's back, and I'm now in the process of painting the white foamy water. Photo's will come soon. Then it is actually finished, except for adding a nice frame to the base, and building a glass case.

The next project will be the IJN carrier Amagi, as she was lying capsized on the bottom at Kure in 1946. It will be a very different project: no aircraft, no anti-aircraft guns, and only a few figures. But I can include a small piece of land, and the carrier will be fun to detail (with bombing damage!) and a dream to paint and weather!

I've seen that photograph before, both in B&W and color...should be a very interesting challenge for you, Marjin, but in your hands the result will be nothing short of awesome!

I have also seen that picture. What a glorious project!
If perfectly suits your prodigious abilities of painting and weathering.

I have no words... and considering that photographs don't do justice to the real thing. If I get the chance to see it live, I will have to bring a chair .

About your Amagi project, do you already have a lower hull or plans? For me, building that is a lot of fun!

I will scratchbuild the lower hull, a first for me. I think it will be fun indeed! I have some plans, but they are not too detailed. I anyone knows how to get good quality ones? Only part of the lower hull is showing, But I rather get it correct.

He does show Amagi. Note: ordering will be challenging and you probably have to send money in envelopes, but he always comes through.

Finally, the last additions!

One of two boats speeding to the rescue:


The second one with a small reminder of the scale:


And one boat full of Lexington crew, heading to a nearby cruiser:


And two life rafts peddling towards Hammann:


A Dauntless which fell overboard:



And finally, I painted the whitewater behind and around small boats, at some points along the hulls of the larger ships, and here-there in the sea. I made bow-waves for the moving small boats with toilet paper and gloss varnish. The splash of the whaleboat which is being put to the water was done in the same way:



Now the scene is finished!

















I still have to finish the sides of the base, add a nice frame to it, build a glass case to protect it, and a wooden box to transport it. But at least the scene itself is done!

An I will have some more writing to do, as AK Interactive asked me to write a book about this diorama. It will be part of a new series of books on ship-modelling they will publish.
