They are scratchbuilt according to photo's and a video of the small ships visible next to Amagi, so they are not available anywhere. In the first pages of this thread, you can find more detailed photos of them. The little PE there is on them was scavenged from several sets.
I agree, some more small ships, also non-navy, and from any nation, would be very welcome additions to the market!

Well, got your Lexington book couple of weeks ago, will have to stick with that for inspiration then

this is becoming better and better. have to admit that I too was expecting some paint... but the overal view is just stunning...

Now, I finally got some progress on the airbrushing. ?

This was a bit exciting, as don�t never airbrush too often. I�m more comfortable with a brush� ?
Also, I would use the hairspray technique for the first time, and for that reason airbrush with Lifecolor acrylics which I also never did before.

First I primed everything with Tamiya fine primer, decanted from the aerosol and airbrushed:




Next, the antifouling red was airbrushed:


Next, I wanted to create the strip of sun-bleached antifouling red (which was above the waterline before she capsized) visible here:


Since I wanted a soft transition (over which I can later hand-paint the dirt on the old waterline), I masked with paper. First, I marked the waterline with tape:


Next, I applied some Blue-Tack as a sticky spacer:


And then stuck a piece of paper on it, making sure to keep it a couple of millimetres away from the surface:


Finally, the tape was removed (because it was not necessary, and could only create a �step� from the thickness of the paint), and the �bleached� antifouling red was airbrushed:

Next, some basic rust tones were airbrushed on the damaged areas:


The interior was masked. For masking the waterline, I first indicated the demarcation between the two antifouling reds with small pieces of tape:


These small pieces of tape helped me to apply the tape for masking the lower hull precisely, as they can be seen and felt through the tape, while the previously sprayed colours cannot:


Next, the light green was airbrushed, and masked again for the dark green. Note how other materials than tape can be used for masking. I found clingfoil especially useful for masking delicate PE-filled areas.


The outside of the hull finished:


Inspiration for the colors mainly came from the video of Amagi after the war:


And of course the famous color photograph:

The damaged areas needed some paint chipped and burned away. I used hairspray technique to get the basic effect, but I will add to it later with a lot of brushwork.

Before spraying the greens, I sprayed bad quality hairspray over the damaged areas which had been base-coated in rusty brown. After applying the greens, I used a small cut-down brush with some water to dissolve the hairspray under the paint and chip it away.

Next, the exterior was masked, and attention turned to the interior:


I applied some hairspray to the rust, and applied a lighter colour, but in a very uneven way:


When chipped away, this creates a bunch of different tones, causing some nice variation in the rust to start with:


Next, the hangar walls were airbrushed white (actually light grey):


And chipped where relevant:


Now, everything was masked for the hangar floor to receive some colour, and hairspray was applied. I do two nice coats, until the surface looks shiny:


Now, grey was airbrushed. Where the chipping will be very heavy, I left it uneven:


And chipped:

Sometimes, I find it easier not to mask around every detail like these tiny PE pieces, but just mask approximately:


And retouch by brush afterwards:


Also, a lot of small defects were retouched by brush in the same way.
This bulkhead, which didn�t receive enough white paint during airbrushing is a good example:




And sometimes, some little problems have to be resolved too. Here, some paint came of with the masking tape. Not the chipped effect I had in mind�


So I also handpainted the affected area:

Next up is the flight deck (including the aft elevator).

superduper, an extensive update which definitely was worth waiting for, Marijn! I must say, you didn't choose the easiest paint brand to use for chipping but you managed the Lifecolor ones well. Can't wait to see next update ^^
