Welcome back to the divine scale, Carl - looking good she is. I've ventured off on a little sidetrack with a 1/72 Fine Molds TIE Interceptor - the inner geek in me needed a little somethin-somethin so to speak, and I've always loved the TIE Interceptor.

Disaster has struck my fleet. After months of doing zero with my 1/700 modern carrier battle group dio I finally started working on my CVN again. I was detailing the island and had left it out on my workbench as I attended to other duties and our cat decided to use it as a toy. The entire thing is destroyed. If it was just the parts being snapped off I may have been able to salvage it, but there are also teeth marks that have gouged it everywhere. And to make matters worse, she made off with the small deck piece to the extended hull of my 1/350 OHP. I have torn the house apart trying to find it to no avail. I have two Akita's, maybe I can convince them the cat is a big chew toy (but I doubt it as they love their little "sister").

I feel sorry for what happened to your fleet pingjockey. Can' t you fix the teeth marks twith some putty???

Progress continues on this beautiful kit.

The chocks are located flush with the hull. Is it acceptible to modelers that I have placed the railings inboard of them rather than in-line with them? It looks better than bending the railings outboard of them and a lot easier than lining up and cutting out the lower rails to accommodate the chocks. Let me know what you think about this issue.



The UNREP platform is quite intricate and fragile. I broke some pieces off of the orginal but I've since repaired it and added railings atop.



I've attached all of the railings all around and up and down. I still have work to do on the MACKS but, I'm ready to prime it and apply the finish color to the hull and bulkheads.

I am afraid the island is too far gone. But I have another kit that will replace it. What really is a problem is my missing deck for the extended hull OHP. I can't find it anywhere. Does anybody know if Academy would send me a new piece?

Carl, your build looks awesome! I have tried to put a kit together all at once before painting, but when it came time for the decks it was a complete disaster, as I never seem to be able to completely mask the superstructure. How do you manage?

If Academy doesn t provide a new piece you may try HLJ you may order from them any part that you want from any kit you wish.

I read about your cat's work. It happened to me a long time, ago, but with more of a happy ending. There were no teeth marks, but my cat got a hold of an engine cowling for a plane that I was doing. I looked and looked and looked for it, with no luck. I had to give up on the model. Then, about 4 years later I found the cowling under my TV's entertainment center when I was moving into my new house. I looked under there at least twice, before! I still have that plane model kit, but haven't done anything with it.

I hand brush the decks on my models because I suck at masking and the paint always rips off and I have to touch it up, anyway. So, if I get deck paint on a bulkhead with my brush, I don't mind having to go back and touch up the bulkhead, afterwards. I use thinned acrylic paint and they seem to be rather forgiving in this respect.





I use small brushes as well as superfine applicators from Microbrush to get into the tight areas. (I have cut the handles off of my brushes so that they fit under my magifying lamp.) Sometimes, I�ll leave off the railings in really tight areas and put them on afterwards. And sometimes, I�ll paint the decks before any railings. Depends on my mood, I guess. Here, I have left off a lot of the small deck equipment so as to accommodate the deck painting, i.e. small boats SLQ-32, MACKs, hose reels, etc.

When the railings are in place, they act as a barrier to stop my brush�s edge from going over onto the bulkhead below it acting as a mask. However, the inboard sides of the railings need a little touch up, afterwards. Once again, I don�t mind this.



On this Belknap model (USS Josephus Daniels CG-27) I am depicting the non-skid patterns. I have applied the Grimy Black, first and then I cut and attach Pactra masking tape strips over it and then paint the lighter Gunship Gray. I�m in the middle of doing this, now.



I think that I�ll have to airbrush the helo deck instead of hand brush because of the tiny holes that depict the tie-downs. I don�t want to loose this great detail that JAG put into this kit. I don�t plan to mask anything. The only thing that I�m really worried about getting this helo deck color on would be the hull and I�ll just have to keep the airbrush perpendicular to the helo deck�s surface. I think I�ll use Gunship Gray on the helo deck and then apply a black and maybe a brown pastel chalk dust on it, just to make the color a little different from the other decks.

Your Hatsushima looks great and an interesting subject. A must have for your collection, isn't it? How many of these will you build?

I've been working all weekend on my Belknap. After completing the deck painting, I got a little ahead of myself by applying some decals and black wash of the little details.

I'm glad that I was able to maintain the tie-down details in the helo deck. I was worried about filling in those tiny holes with paint while hand brushing so, I airbrushed this part of the deck with Gunship Gray and then rubbed some black pastel chalk on it to change the color a little. The challk highlighted the tie-downs, too. After the helo deck decals were on I stuck a needle into the holes that were covered by the decals.





My Joseph Daniels an my Scott (Kidd class) models together. The Scott has been in standby for about a year, now. Its about 80% done. I need to do all of the railings (I didn't attach them before painting like I did on the Belknap.) and add the life raft canisters and rig it out.

Nektarios - so That's where the Hatsushima went that was in the Yamagumo box!

Carl - she's coming along quite beautifully, you're doing a good job on her overall, man.

Thank you Carl. I have already built 3 Hatsushima class ships and i intend to build more, around a dozen.
It appears that you have become a fast builder too Carl. Once more a great update from you.

Simon until this summer i ll get more Yamagumo/Hatsushima kits. All i need is the Hatsushima kits. If you want more Yamagumo they are yours.

Speaking of Japanese, gentlemen, here's my latest pictures - the Yamagumo DDK Rebuild. I made the compact 5" guns from the French 100mm turret, with a Mk45 barrel fitted into them. I added my own CIWS in place of the old torpedo tubes, as they were superceded by the two quad 24" racks. Mk29 for additional AAW protection. All totalled, it's a little more ASuW than ASW, though the heavy torpedoes could be used for both one might reason. Pictures!

Nice build there Simon. an interesting rebuild of the old JMSDF Yamagumo class. The ships of the 1960s and early 1970s are among the most beautiful ever combining modern armament and showing the lines of the old WW II ships (they are not boxy like the ships from 1970s onwards).

Thankyou, Nektarios - the compliments are welcome, as are a few more Yamagumos - I could see all sorts of ideas for how to go about remodeling these beauties.
