As far as I know, and this is simply what I have heard from multiple sources, G-Factor just makes a brass re-cast of the kit prop. So, if the kit prop isn't accurate ..........

There was a pretty decent discussion of this subject, as I recall in the Iowa CASF thread. Hank went with the Kieth Bender custom props. You might enquire as to the cost, but considering the investment of all the parts and pieces, the props are a focal point, especially if you leave everything bare brass.

Just a quick question regarding painting, Gents. Which gets painted first, the black "Belly Band" or the red hull? I'm thinking you always cover a lighter color with a darker color, which would mean the grey goes on first, then the red, and the black band last. Or does it really make any difference?

That's the way I did it, not a professional painter. Belly band is known as "boot topping".

Oh it is, huh? Well Tom, up here in snow country "boot topping" is something that you rub on your boots before the snow flies to keep them waterproof. Nothing like wet feet when it's 10 degrees outside and a foot of white stuff on your driveway

Transported Alaska through snow, sleet and the dark of night over the hill and through the woods, bypassing grandma's house to its winter season shop. Appears to be in one piece so far.

Hi Gang, How long does it take acrylic paint to fully cure to the point where I can tape over it and not have to worry about the tape taking off the paint underneath it. It's been primed, so it should be adhered satisfactorily

Assuming the model in room temperature ~70-74 degrees F, two days soonest. If you procrastinate, even better! Do a mask test on a small portion that's hidden if possible by seeing if it will come off with paint. Blue masking tape or similar.

And try de-tacking the tape on a clean surface first to remove most of the stickiness from it - it'll help in reducing the chances of pulling up paint.

Yea, FUN I really think that driving in snow would be ok if it weren't for the idiots out there that haven't got a clue about common sense, etc. The ice storms keep the repair shops in business!!!

We're into a full week of rain and with the passing of Chungking or whatever the hell his name is (latest tropical storm) up the east coast, it should be a wet weekend to boot. We WERE planning on going to the fair this weekend, but that's now a distinct improbability.

Whenever the power comes back on and I warm the studio back up, will get out the color chips and start matching a batch or two of Golden Acrylic. I need to do the main deck before I can do much more. Of course need to chase down the en transit Alaska book, possibly looping between post offices. Surely rivet counters, myself and a host of folks will be able to pick out many obvious errors in the model due to insufficient information.

Hope that you aren't having to canoe about! Most of our new early snow has melted, the river at a surprisingly high level for this time of year. Progress on Alaska waiting on (1) arrival of Steve's book (2) work on 4 runner (head gasket etc) (3) some issue with heater in studio. Mainly don't want to progress on too much more in case serious alterations are necessary.

The only previous waterline model I completed was a very diminutive USS Whitehurst, DE 645, about 6" long, completed with absolutely no PE, using an old girlfriends long straight hair for lifelines. Mounted on a walnut block. However Alaska will likely need for me to simulate some water! Something I will have to bone up on and experiment with. A ways down the road, or a lot of bridge under the water as my submarine friends might say.
