Hi
Hope you do not mind but I have a general question. Could anybody tell me which type of aircraft the IJN chokai carried in 1938.

Judging from what I see in the photos of her in Chinese waters in the late 1930s, I'd say Kawanishi E7K1/E7K2 Alfs and Daves (designation escapes me). Probably two of the earlier E7K1s and one Dave

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Dan on your IJN Maya build, dont forget that IJN Maya had enlarged hoods for her number 2# an 4#(later 3# ) turrets:

First is from December 1943 and the last two from May 1944.
Edit:Every surving Imperial Japanese Heavy cruiser had this modification sometime in late 1943/early 1944, even the IJN Aoba, expect IJN Mogami and IJN Tone class.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Thx, Atma. I did attempt it, though it is arguable as to whether or not they are large enough. I cut off the Aoshima molded hoods and replaced them with hoods from the PitRoad set, which are clearly larger then the Aoshima versions when placed side to side. I appreciate your bringing it to my atttention in the first place.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Well, if you got any of the IJN Myoko class by Fujimi, cause Fujimi provides with extra hoods for the enlarged version. So if you have the kits look at the boxes for spares !

Bad news for Dan(?), Fujimi will release a new tooled IJN Maya(1944) in this summer in 1/700.

Atma, will Fujimi's new tooled IJN Maya(1944) be waterlined by chance?

Well, of course. The truism about a new mold coming out as one finishes the old one always holds true. I'll be happy with mine. Degaussing cable - will it or won't it? I bet Fujimi plays it safe and puts one on.
I've yet to determine whether the bulge issue with my Fujimi Takao is an aberration of my particular kit, or a mold problem. WOnder how Maya's will turn out, unless they reuse the Takao hull.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Im surprised that there not coming out with an IJN Atago instead of the IJN Maya, with the model molds being nearly similar. You would think that it would be easier and a cheaper way for a quick turn over for profits.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
There is going to be a completely new hull for the IJN Maya. And even if IJN Atago was selected only a post 1943 version was available if you have to use the IJN Takao hull(sealed portholes).
And at the end of the day, you can make an IJN Atago from Fujimi's 1/700 IJN Takao model.
Just the 25mm single AA needs to have slightly different locations.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
A questions slightly off the new Fujimis Maya topic (though I am interested, too - and would be even more in a 1942 Chokai
)...
What color the canvas blast bags and splinter covers on Takaos (and wartime IJN ships generally) should be? These are usually being depicted as white (or dirty white) for natural canvas but according to Steve Backer in Shipcraft 5: Japanese Heavy Cruisers / Myoko and Takao classes the canvas was left natural colour before the war but then it was stained light brown sometime at the beginning of war. The wonderful 1/700 Maya by Claudio Matteini showcased in this volume has the canvas light brown.
Wartime photos are usually quite blurred and it is generally not easy to distinguish between worn white and light brown. Does anybody have some more info on this subject?
What about other classes - Aobas, Mogamis...?

I use Tamiya colour's and for the blast bags I use the XF-2 =Flat White with 30% or 20% X-12=Gold Leaf, for a yellowish shade.

Re: Calling all IJN Takao class fans
Prewar and early war are white; that is obvious from comparison to sailor uniforms and other artifacts.
Midwar on is more difficult to say. I think they moved to a unbleached canvas, which is a yellow off- white, and then, possibly, even dyed the canvas. But, not sure if it's a light brown or gray. No one seems to say. I've been choosing the darker canvas to brownish sort of shade, FWIW.
