I see there are two types of 15" mk1 main guns- long and short , which are right for the QE class ? ( I lent my AOTS HMS Warspite to a freind for his build :wave_1: )

I'm not sure what you're talking about... I believer there was really only one type 15" Mk.1 gun. All with the same length - 42 calibres that is.

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNBR_15-42_mk1.htm

But that same gun was placed in three distinctly different types (modellers viewpoint) of turret, plus a couple of variations of those. The QEs had the original Mk. 1 turret for their entire life, only modified at a certain point in time.

There have been two types of Mk I 15" turret (variant was changed for higher gun elevation, so "short" and "long" range perhaps?) and one type of Mk II 15" turret (HMS Hood only). All used the same gun and the same model barrel can be used.

Good morning EJ,

You're right about two types of Mk. 1: original Mk. 1 as in the QE and R classes, and the 'light-weight) Mk. 1* with reduced armour thickness, as shown by the rounded front shield (9" armour) instead of the faceted one (13" armour). I did a thorough investigation, and from what I gather from photo's only the Repulse and Renown received these light-weight turrets, and the planned Glorious and Courageous (2 each), but those turrets finally ended up in the Vanguard after modification as Mk. 1*N.

And of course you had the Mk. 2 with facets just as the original, but with hgher and steeper sidewalls.

Navweaps is not completely correct as to which ships what type of turrets went, I think I have an updated list of that, in particular they are off regarding the monitors.

Thats ok I was looking for brass barrels on evilbay and they were noted as long and short. It could be as you said - 1 option with blast bags , the other without , that would explain it.

Anyone any info on QE's 1943 stern walk?

R&R states that it was removed in 1916, only to be refitted sometime during 1926.

Anyone have any further info?

Also, a question about the bottom colour photo of the set posted Sun Nov 27, 2011 7:59 pm by ATMA on page 13 of this thread.

Is it REALLY a proposed 1/350 Warspite by Trumpeter? Or - Is it actually Academy's Warspite posted along with Trumpeter's QE for display comparison purposes?

It seems odd that nothing more has been heard about Trumpeters Warspite - if there really ever was one......

The Academy Warspite uses PE cranes, whereas the ones in Atma's pics do not - thus, it's likely not the Academy kit.

But Timmy - does Academy give you the PE cranes as optional, with the plastic ones also included in the kit? I looked at the cranes and wondered if the Warspite had just been hastily assembled from the available plastic parts?

You're right that the Academy kit includes plastic cranes as well, so my original reasoning was incorrect. However, the crane base moulding and funnel top gives it away as not the Academy kit. Whereas the alleged Trumpy kit has disgusting solid crane bases, the Academy version has a vaguely more acceptable open lattice: http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... y/e-08.jpg As well, the Trumpy appears to have PE funnel grill work, while Academy has no such parts.

Your right on the Trumpy having PE funnel grill in its fret Timmy but the fret is very small and I am waiting on ether WEM or Pontos etc to come up with an alterantive set for this ship (QE)from Trumpeter.

There are a few issues with this kit so it will Interesting to see some add ons for this.

The way it constructed it will be difficult to do a water line job on it, but time will tell.
Its a nice kit and as you say the crane's need attention for one.

One thing I like is the pipework in the funnel, saves having to scratch this.
The fighting tops(superstructers) can be made in seperate sections(like other model ships on the market) if your useing a wood deck/painting etc, the smaller guns(20mm AA need sorting in my veiw), so its down to the after market me thinks. :cool_2:

Referring back to the cranes, I got the Trumpeter 1/350 HMS QE last week, and having examined the parts, the latticework for the crane jibs is nothing like that shown on the ones in the photo supposedly depicting Trumpeter's Warspite, so the plot thickens!

The QE and Warspite cranes are completely different. Refer back to the page 13 models - one is of the QE, the other of the supposed Warspite.

Yep. Just waiting for it to appear for sale somewhere online. They have also released a deck for the 1/350 QE too!

I noticed their 1/350 deck for QE missed the steel decking around the 4.5 turrets.

I'm sure a lot have already read it, but I'm currently reading Iain Ballantyne's Warspite. It really is a nice read.

It looks like Trumpeter have left out the 20mm gun tubs that are at the side of X turret and aft of Y turret on their 1/350 QE. I have the Pontos set for the Warspite so I have some spare Academy tubs which I might be able to use.

Does anyone have a good picture of the tubs alongside X turret? They seem to have a higher structure on the side nearest the after superstructure.
