But there is still time for one more detail, that I really like about this ship. ?
Apparently Amagi, like other IJN ships camouflaged in port at the end of the war, had some sand yellow camouflage haphazardly applied to some of the gun and director platforms.


I painted this with Humbrol enamels by hand, following the historical foto�s as closely as I could.





Also the stern area had this improvised camouflage paint applied.

And bizarrely enough some of your PB photos in this thread are still visible and some aren't...quite strange. But pleased to see that not all is lost though ^^.

Don't worry, I'll post updates when I have them. But I have been on holiday abroad during the last 4 weeks and haven't done any modelling. I actually got back only last night at 2am!

Ok, so I didn't get back to the bench soon�

But lately I have been painting again!
I first added a series of filters over the model to vary the tones, add dust, salt and rust effects.
They are most intended to color the entire surface, but as these consist of very thinned paint they tend to be drawn by capillary action into seams and around details too like washes. That is why I do these at the beginning of the weathering process, so I can add shadows to the seams afterwards.

Over this, filters were applied to break the evenness and get a richer tonal variety. First the surface was dampened, then different colours of heavily thinned oil paint applied, and finally these were blended in the surface.


After this dried overnight, this technique was repeated, but with dusty tones, sometimes adding vertical streaks in the process.


A forward section showing the same process. Intensity was varied so not every part of the ship will look the same. The effect might look overdone in some places, but will become less obvious after some more effects are added later.




The entire hull:


Filters were also added to the burned and rusted bomb damage, but with several rusty tones.




These rusty filters were allowed to flow as a wash too in corners, and some vertical streaks were added at the same time.

And so did the flight deck. The aft section:

Next up will be shadows around all the details and some highlighting.
