Yeah mate I'll be there for the show in Wagga and this time if all goes well in the next few weeks I may get the Admiral running. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this.
I told my mum when I started the Admiral Kuznetsov that I would not build anything larger. Well the Kirov (Frunze) is only 3.5m and the admiral 4.3m so I kept my word.....
As for look I think the people couldn't decide if it was a skinny Canoe or something else. But yes I did get some looks.

Hi all, well it has been a while since I have been able to get back to the battle-cruiser. I�m strengthening up the stringers and doing the cross-members. Following a few builders idea�s over here in Australia, I using counter sunk screws to hold in the stringers (besides the resin) and also longer ones for the cross members. These will then be covered with filler and sanded back, so once the hull is painted you will never know they are there.

I may also put in some "blocks" around the water tight bulkheads with countersunk screws to increase their strenght.

The cross members will get a "curved" top glued onto them so I can shape the deck as per the real kirov's.

This is looking rather good, please keep the up dates coming . What size and type of motors are you going to fit?

Hi Dave, at the moment I'm planning on using two of these, they can turn a 60mm prop for considerable speed, so hoping the cruiser's props (although still larger) will be ok, it will be an experiment though.

they are 2.5 Inches in diameter and 4inches long.

Yeah those motor's are very torquey Ideal for large dia. props and if you need more speed turn the ESC's speed up! (If its an Electronize unit!!)

PS: Just started fitting some stingers and deck bracing to the Type23 hull I got off Ya! Running gear turned up last week from George...and the next day the Buehler motors from MB!.So I figured the fitout process must begin!!

Superb motor , question what length of prop shaft and tube are you using . Also what will be the estimated out of the water weight be.? I think the Kirov's are powerful looking vessels and will look quite spectacular cruising on the water.

They are thru the TF72 club shop mate, Give Michael Brown an e-mail to see if he has any left (I think they are $50each) Jim down here in Adelaide has 4 in BB63 (turning 78mm props!) and she hauls A$$!!

Time for an update, I�ve been much delayed with uni study and work, but today the decks started. These will take me a little, as I need to leave holes for removable sections (such as the forward missile launchers and anchor winches) but her quarterdeck/flight deck, will have two openings, one for accessing into the Towed sonar array dock as build that later, but also more importantly it will give me access to the rudders and servo without the need to take off a deck. The second area is for access to her helo hanger. Whilst I do not know about the operation of the elevator (maybe later) I will have the doors opening and closing so that people can see the unique helo hanger when the model is at a static display.

I like the idea with the working hanger doors . Question are there any other working features you want to include in the build?

Rob well done on your Kirov Hull. I like that you plan to have a working elevator on your aft deck. Do you also plan to have the VDS working? What about the Torpedo hatches? I want mine to work on my Frunze. I might even think about a few rockets but that will depend on safety if I go there. Next time I get a chance to look at someone else attempt, I want to even try a working anchor system.
Your aft hatch is rather large, I guess its for access to the rudders and VDS. Is the area covered by the helo netting to small? I was thinking about that size of hatch myself. Keep up posting of your model I'm very interested.
Also I will make a DVD soon from my collection of pictures and send them over to you now that things are settling down here. Did you want all the Russian stuff or just the Kirov class pictures?

Well today is a very good day, as I arrived home to two new sets of running gear from George Sitek. Scharnhorst (also 1:72) and Peter the Great.
George�s skill never ceases to amaze. I sent him some photos, the size I needed and I get back an excellent copy.
The shafts are 450mm long from tip to tip, 6mm diameter and the props are 80mm. I�m not entirely sure of the weight as I have not worked it out yet, but I�m estimating about 35KG finished and ballasted.

Moving parts wise, I�m planning the following, although not all will be installed at build, some I will come back and do, such as the missile launch system.
� Independent engines.
� Rudders.
� Nav lights
� Flight deck lights (seperate switch to Nav lights)
� Opening VDS door (this will be for static displays so people have more to look at, not for whilst she is sailing)
� Opening Helo hanger doors (also for static display to allow people to see inside)
� Navigation radars (will always be working)
� Firecontrol radars (will run off a seperate switch so they can be switched on and off)
� One of the anchor winches
� Rotatable main gun
� Working missile launcher.

So this weekend, the running gear goes in.

Yeah George does some cool work Always good to find presents waiting! I have a set of Georges Running gear sitting in shed to go in the Type23!! just finished joining the hull back together.

I just laughed when I saw your 35kg comment! You do mean 35kg of ballast right?? USS Long Beach is about 65kg fully ballasted! (and mine is half a metre shorter and less beam....) I have 4 12v10ah batteries, 4x2kg weights, 2x6.5kg, and 3kgs of smaller wt's I use to adjust trim! I just started using the 3kg of trim weights to get her a bit deeper in the water depending on the salinity of the pond.

Hi Robert Yes George Sitek does a lovely job .Just waiting on the running gear for the new hull. His Daring running gear is just stunning. I see that you are incorporating lot of working features , it�s a realm that I have not explored for many years , simply because my knowledge of electronics -wiring is more than a little rusty . I do like to see a multi-functional working model especially a carrier but having seen others work through the logistics of linking in the mechanics to the various fittings and getting them to work as they should amazes me that they actually do work . Best of luck with installing the running gear I will keep looking in for updates. I t�s the sheer size of your Kirov that gets me ,I couldn�t get that size of hull in my shed even if I cut it in half .

Any updates to your build mate?

Well Rob today I started a bit of work on my Frunze. Set up the area for the shafts through the hull and where I will place the motors. My props don't have the cross in the middle yet, I'll add that later maybe. Also included some pictures of the motors I plan to use.
