You're right about those things. Last time I did the deck I used super glue. This time I'm going to try model glue since I figure if I <bleep> up it will be easier to fix.

Here is a picture of the planks after coloring. I used water colors (Black. Burnt Sienna, White) with different levels of pigment. I then put a coat of the Kure Arsenel grey acrylic over all of them.

Be careful if you buy midwest scale lumber. I ordered 15 packs of the same size and the place where I ordered it had to order more. so I got 8 packs then 7. Well it seems like not all the wood is the same width. This is going to make doing this deck much more of a pain!

I dig the color cariation, very nice! Too bad about the varying thickness. I got all my deck material (notice I purposely did not say "wood" with the juvenile senses of humor we all have) from northeast scale lumber, and it was all perfectly uniform in width and thickness. Highly recommended.

Laying wood is tough! The color is a little lighter than I was looking for. I might hit it with a little black when Im done.

Just watched The Admiral and there were a couple of good CG shots. Here is their deck in June 42' along with a picture of the current condition of my deck. Once it's done I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Might put a layer of brown over everything. Maybe a layer or dark grey. Or I might leave it be considering the troubles Ive had with my prior deck. Will probably do some testing prior to doing anything. Hope to be done with the deck my next weekend.

What film is that screenshot from?

The only film that I know of called "The Admiral" with nice ship CG shots is a Russian film about an officer in the old Imperial Russian Navy trying to fight the Germans and then the Bolsheviks...

This film is Japanese made in 2011.

I think that deck is looking good, I also think the color is spot on. How long has it taken to do that much?

Been working on the deck for 2 weeks. Should be done with it this weekend. At certain angles the deck looks too white. The wood seemed to lighten up for days after I painted it. I'm thinking of adding a layer of thinned brown paint. Also thinking of adding Future to the deck hoping it will give it a wet look and maybe darken it. I'm going to be testing out these things once I finish and see what kinda extra wood I have. I'll post pics of the tests.

All the Future will do is give the deck a glossy look. However, since it ewill serve as a sealed layer fromt eh wood, you could then use a wash of some sort to give the deck color some more color. It will also allow some wash to see into the grooves between planks.

Thanks Dan. That's another thing I need to test. I keep changing what I want the deck to be. One day I want it grey...the next dark brown. Just don't want to mod the deck and it be worse than what it started out as.

Senken, If your going for the look in the picture from Admiral, Then I would suggest doing nothing. Like you said yourself .In certain light it looks right and in other light it doesn't ( I know that's not a quote) but light is a Sum Bi#&h. Some times it right and others it's not.But to me it looks great and I would suggest keep'in the course.

Wow, that's sweet! Diggin on the deck, very very cool. I think the color looks great, but you could always do a light wash or stain if need be.

All the wood is down. I'm making a 4"x8" test desk to try out some other final colors. Thinking of going with a grey cover or a brown cover. I saw on the internet a video of mixing vinegar with steel wool to get a look of aged wood and I've made a batch and will try it. Also will be seeing if nail polish remover will remove the excess glue on the deck.

Anyone else having problems getting shipments from L'Arsenal? I ordered their 1/200 Yamato Turrets late November and still haven't gotten them. They are saying that it could take up to 2 months. The turrets where what I was going to work on after the deck. Guess I'll have to work on the superstructure.

OK I did a couple tests to try to get a final color for the deck.

Column 1 Future
Column 2 Brown/Black/Water paint
Column 3 Vinegar/Steel wool to water 3 to 1
Column 4 Vinegar/Steel wool Whole
Column 5 Vinegar/Steel wool to Water half/half

The future I liked. It darked the wood which I wanted. The Vinegar/Steel woolwhole and 75% solution added too much orange when I thought it was going to add grey with a hint of orange.

So it's down to the Brown/Black/Water paint and the Vinegar/Steel wool half/half. I might add some black paint to the 50/50 solution and see what I get.

The nail polish remover couldn't take off the excess glue from the wood.

I think column 5 would be the best, is that under the yellow light or the fluorescent light.

That sample pic was under fluorescent light and I'm leaning toward column 5. Might add a little black paint to darken things up a little.

Personally, I would go with 5 without the black. But I suppose what your going to do with it will be the determining factor. Shows, selling it, or just keeping it on a shelf.Considering how much work and great it looks. I imagine your going to take it to shows.So giving that most of the shows that I've been to have fluorescent lighting, and or going LED lighting. Adding some black may be a good idea. Have you thought about a darker grey like smoke? May just give it a grey tinge that I think would look nice.
