It was the original! Aside from the blade which had been replaced twice, and the handle three times. Much the same as this "Dragon" model.

Thank you for the comments everyone, I feel like I don't even deserve them. I haven't been on here a long time, and haven't checked too much of other's work, for which: shame on me!

After the summer I will be jumping back into the ship business, I (kinda) promise.

I've been busy with building airplanes , aside from usual aspects of life (changing jobs, divorce, and might be moving soon), but want to work on ships real bad!

Thank you for your input Willie. To be honest, my reasons from 5 years ago to work on the superstructure separately somehow don't make as much sense today, but I do have a plan up my sleeve to do this without doing any damage. I hope it works, because I agree: That should be in place before spending a year detailing everything

Hello gents!

First of all, thank you for the kind words regarding my aircraft. They sure get me thru these (over)complicated shipmodels.
Finished a 1/48 Dauntless too, but right after that I was actually happy to jump back into the Vincennes. Got a lot done!

Hull is painted, decalled, it just needs more refined weathering. The warning circles on the deck were stitched together from various 350 decal sets from other ships, so they don't fit the CG class perfectly, but I bet you couldn't tell that at first glance, right? Well, then stop looking too closely!

The main mast is the centerpiece of these ships both literally and metaphorically . It was a lot of work, and a lot of dry-fitting.

There are more tiny imperfections with railing installations than with the Nimitz, not sure why. Long ways to go, but I think it's possible to finish it this year if I keep at it!

I'll let the pictures talk!

I feel like there is very little to actually tell, I have just been correcting a lot of inaccuracies of the kit, and adding tons of styrene at every turn.
But if anyone has any questions, I will try my best to answer.
I mean, I could go on and on...

This build has been quite the saga!

Well done though! It's amazing the amount of detail that you've added to the ship, and I do appreciate the odd aircraft photo, especially that Dauntless. Makes me think back to the one I built in the 80's and actually won an award at CAPCOM 90 with through the IPMS. I know my model is no longer around anymore because it was cleaned out of my parents basement a couple of years ago and had an opportunity for 'flight' into a dumpster. Alas.

So yours is very impressive, and the Vincennes as well.

It is hard to stay with projects this detailed, they are very draining, plus life happens, but I want to ensure all who check in on this thread once in a while, at the end of it there will be a finished model, and within a year. Unless aliens beam me away to their planet.

That is so very unfortunate about your Dauntless! Do you have at least pictures of it left? Few models win a war against the dumpster...
I have never entered a model in a competition... Congratulation to you, I think that's quite admirable!
I have been doing this hobby for over 30 years and probably built between 150 and 180 models, but I have less then 40 to show for it.
Most of the old ones were shot with a pellet gun. Aren't kids just stupid? On the other hand: where would I keep them all? But the ones I have now, are being stored properly and protected by the Swiss Guard!

Yes, your scratch-built masts are Truly a Work-O-ART!! I, myself, like your grill work for the decks of your radar illuminators....GOOD SHOW!!

I will be looking at your work a bit more carefully when ' I ' start on my work on "USN Missile Cruisers"-Project, ending with a few Ticos. But I do have a couple of questions.....

1) What scale is this??!! I have looked High/Low in your posts and couldn't find it, I am aware of 'Dragon' kits, but they come in 700 and 350 scales.

2) The color you used on the SS structure I can figure, but......... What is That DANG Color of the SPY-radars??!! (I have been trying to find an appro color, but to no avail, till I saw yours!!)

You are right!!! I totally forgot to mention the scale! 1/350. I think you have to be a wizard to do this in 700. But I know those wizards are out there. Hats off to them. Not me. I can't.
The Hull /superstructure color is Humbrol 128. As for the radar?!? I painted that YEARS ago.... Either Humbrol 129, or 166.

Off to building the rear SATCOM dish tower. Pictures soon!

The superstructure is getting more and more details added! Some of them have been waiting installation all painted up for 3-4 years now..

Good news: White Ensign has a very accurate rendering of the satellite dish "basket" they used on these ships in the '80s and early '90s
Bad news: It's not found in their Ticonderoga set, but in their Wasp (LHD) set. So I robbed it from there, and later on I need to figure out how to build one for my future LHD. It's gonna be very difficult. Anyway, that's a headache for later.

Being unemployed sure has a great effect on my Vincennes
I got over a few hurdles with this beast, and I am very proud to present the starboard side whaleboat station! It gave me a few sleepless nights. It required a lot of consideration as to what material is best for all the different applications. I am very happy with how the boat tie-downs turned out. I used hair-thin copper wire , coated in the center with Tamiya grey liquid surfacer. I used the same idea when making those bags (containing ropes in real-life) hanging on the crane. TIME-CONSUMING! Some of the very thin "rods" are stretched sprue.
I know , the decals (CG-49) on the boat are too big. I didn't have smaller AND still manageable lettering. There are others of millions of imperfections, which are painfully visible on the closeups, so I provided a "birds-eye view", to kinda put the project into perspective: Just about no one in the world will be looking at my ship from 4 inches away.

I started making details for the aft section, starting with the flight deck control station. My initial attempt failed (after wasting 3 hours) on the account of having used plastic too thick. Even crazy glue doesn't hold well this kind of clear plastic. So I am using the crazy glue packaging, which is much more manageable!

Thank you , I'll try to keep up the detailing . In the mood for it lately .
The plastic thickness?! Fraction of a millimeter. Literally the thinnest plastic packaging you can find.
I painted it with Tamiya's clear green acrylic paint . Thinned it out quite a bit . These windows, in real life, only have a light tint ( it seem to me , anyway) .
