I have a ? i see all these great models, which inspire to think ahead,, which my better half loves.. I have the revell kit of the fdr, and heller 1/600 uss forrestal, ok here a thought basically same scale, how about kit bashing them into the midway post 1988 config.. Any thoughts.. or am I just dreaming, I know someone did it in the gallery but it was vietnam era.. The only problem with be the aircraft, not many modern in 1/600.. 1/350 too big... and I think 1/700 a hair too small.. is this a pipe dream or what.. dude you rock.. your work is A++++++++.

Sorry I can't seem to log on.
@bgire As for detailed pic of the flight deck as commissioned, go buy the new USS Midway book as reviewed on this site on Nov 2008. It's an excellent book and has a 2 page pic of the hanger deck empty on commission. It's about the only pic you will find.
There is this blueprint, but its from about 1947 on since the this shows the lengthened bridge and the rearranged mk 37 director to the top of the island. Also note the enclosed bow. http://www.midwaysailor.com/midwaymemor ... ory85b.jpg

Not exactly true. The hull dimensions are different enough to show that this is not the case. However, the two had a couple of ties. First, the Montana powerplant arrangement was duplicated in the Midway's. (The Midways had the 212,000 HP plant of the Iowa's, while the Montana's were designed with a 172,000 HP plant.) Second, because of their size, the Midways were built in drydocks just as had been planned for the Montana's. This has led to the belief that the Midway's directly replaced the Montana's in the building program. When this last assumption is taken to the next step, then you get the myth that the two had the same hull.mitchell300 wrote:Hello m8's, i got a question.

I am really enjoying all this ,but, I have a big problem. When I was a seagoing MARINE on the MIDWAY I don,t remember all those deck extensions. What did I do ,sleep through something important?? I do remember the angle deck and all that ,but,NOT those extra places.HELP!!! My MIDWAY looks like it,s going to start out as the U.S.S. ANTIETAM.This is the only ship I,ve found so far locally that even comes a little close.Theres a lot of work there I know ,but,I,ve just got to have MY MIDWAY!!! commodore4

so that story about it being a Montana hull is crap. Thanks for the insight.Dick J wrote:Not exactly true. The hull dimensions are different enough to show that this is not the case. Re: Calling all USS Midway class (CVB) Fans
Kind of off topic in a way.
BUT, wouldn't that extention of the deck o nthe modern Midway make her more top heavy and possibly make her unstable? Its kinda a large section of ship to add. dumb question I know, but i look at that deck exstention and wonder about it.

It was finally decided that this was the case. That is why the ship received the big blisters in Japan.

Hey GTBRED, where were those photos of Coral Sea taken?
They look a lot like Sydney, AUS.
