:wave_1: Thanks for showing it evo6tme!
I'll post mine soon.

Awning Stanchions:

I've heard many ways of making canvas covers while browsing other foums and some research like glue, foil and others. Today, I'll be trying 2 ways, glue and white paper. The first part to be covered is the stern.

I First tried the glue. The most HORRIBLE way that I used! :mad_2:

Image
I used copper wire. Oversized but alright to me. I saw a topic here that in order for the glue to not have a very wide space to be spread or else the glue will drip and mess up the model, a canopy must be added, But that was what actually happened. I kept testing bigger brushes on and on but the glue keeps dripping to the deck surface. I was so furious that I tore the entire canopy and removed the stanchions including the rigging.

I did some retouching around the messed up areas, replaced the stanchions and repainted them. So because of this insane dilemma, I used white paper instead.

Image
The results were quite nice to me. It was more better than the glue thing. I just cutted the outline, folded a little the center, glued it and it's done.

Next would be near the X barbette and ..
More of it soon!

Shouldn't have applied the glue with a brush - a smooth stick, applied...pah, explained here, from Jim Baumann:

"I spread the diluted white glue with a toothpick. start in a corner at an approx angel of 45 degrees. draw the ' film' inboard along your frame--ALL THE TIME maintaining contact with all surfaces until you have joined all four edges of your section--draw the toothpick out at a corner. ALLOW TO SET before attemping the next bit--this will only take 5-10 mins, failure to heed this advice will result in your first film ' popping'...

I have successfully covered apertures of 1.5" square--larger can be done--but the film does pop often on application-- very frustrating indeed. Once it pops you have to try again real soon--otherwise it starts to dry--remove quickly!

PRACTICE OFF THE MODEL on a mock up first!!! It needs a bit of practice!!

I mix the white glue 50/50 with water"

Make sure the toothpick is resting on the frame at all times until the end.

About the main mast.. would it be alright if AP507B be used on the Upper mast?
And what is the purpose of the round mark on the roof of the "B" gunhouse
Try the following article. It gives the colours or purpose for each of the things you asked about (read through everything, to include the Special Notes for AP507B)- http://hmshood.com/hoodtoday/models/tip ... htm#ap507b

Thanks Molders! I'll try the glue technique again and see if it really works.

The X barbette was really challenging. Photos of Hood showing the canvas covers was rare. I only 7 images of it showing the covers in its 1922-24 era. This pic is just one of them:
Image
(courtesy of http://www.history.navy.mil/)
I mentioned before on the first page that instead of placing 14 bipods on each side, only 11 was placed. So the covers won't be really the same as the real one.

(I just used the paper for covers  )
Image
I first drawed the outline roughly on the paper, cutted it then glued. The stanchions near the barbette are yet to be added.

Your technique is really improving as well, and pretty soon we will be lerning from you :cool_2:

Thanks again to Mr. Frank Allen of the Hood Association for showing me a diagram of the standard boom carried on Hood:

Image

The boom construction was very easy and straight forward. The boom is copper tube. The ladders are supplied on the GMM fret and the boom rigging is thin nylon thread.
The boom was easy to make but controlling the rigging was hard

I know, bad quality!

Actually, that was evo6tme who sent you the scan from the Anatomy of the Ship book.

We do have some photos of this boom on our site though- very large, wood, painted the same colour as the hull (it was not bare wood in 1939-1941). The portside boom was a bit more pitted in areas than the starboard one- there was a bomb blast that threw a lot of splinters into it.

Hi Nick,

Many people use the same avatars here. The Hood badge is one of these. Its one of eleven that I drew and later okayed MW to use as avatars. The others are Ark Royal, Bismarck, Duke of York, KGV, Prince of Wales, Prinz Eugen, Rodney, Scharnhorst, Tirpitz and Warspite. I had asked for a specific gold Hood badge for myself in return for the above avatars but that never happened.

Anyway, lovely model. Really excellent! You are just 13?! Amazing! You do a far better job at 13 than many people with years more experience do. Well done!

Yes, a good movie too. Both it and its companion film are quite good- very fair and honest looks at the situation from both sides.
