nice work Bill , really looking good , I imagine how a Sangamon Class looks like in scale 1/32 , with all those beautifull planes in 1/32 , Avengers , Dauntless , Wildcat by Trumpeter , and figures by Nemrod , I have a dream :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo:

Hi Bill Good to get your up dates. Question I see you may include lighting but would such lighting be see any way . Just a thought as it's a subject{ lighting} that I haven't give much thought to . Also I like the idea of showing the aircraft on the hanger deck , various stages of maintenence perhaps? Crews working on the aircraft ? Just thoughts . This is a superb subject and one that has lots of potential for subtle detailing.

Hello Dave..... I feel the lighting aspect would be seen, but rather subtle, which is the effect I am after. There are 4 openings on either side of the hull to view the hanger deck. Not very big, so you would not see much. Yes, the ship will have about 100 figures. Hope the effect turns out good.....Thanks for the post Kiev looks supurb, as usual......Bill W.

Ah crap. Were will you possibly be located?

Anyway, the open hangers and details are amazing as always. Its hard sometimes to see how well you can command your hands so...........It comes from years of practice I know. I still want to see one done for RC.

are you going to scratch build the AA mounts for this one? Since I am both delusional and dumb enough to tell people that I am I am working on a 1/35 late WWII Idaho (BB-42) and have been looking for someone who makes 20mm mounts (mostly to save time). Looks good so far as usual.
P.S. I know most of your craft are destined for display but do you aver R/C any of your incredible models? Also where does one find 1/32 scale air craft?

Hello Fooman..... :wave_1: So, USS Idaho, BB-42......32,000 tons, 624' overall. That makes your project a little under 18 feet long in 1/35. A daunting task even for r/c. I could do the 20's for you, but I'm just too busy right now. You need good drawings of what was on the ship in the timeframe you wish to build. Idaho is a 1930's BB, as you know. I would suggest looking around at 1/35 scale armor stuff. Good place is squadronshop.com. You may find the a/c there too. Lots of 1/32 aircraft available. Good luck... Keep us posted. And no, I don't do r/c. Only scale. I'll purchase the AA mounts for Santee as she is 1/96. In 1/35, you'll really have to look aroung to even find the guns. You'll have to make your own mounts and turrents. Check out my Indianapolis build or the Indiana build, both on this forum, if you have not already. Thanks for the post......BW

Hello again all! :wave_1: Well, it has been awhile since I have posted anything. Many other things going on here but I am back on track. My last post was concerning the details on the main deck of the carrier. This was the main deck of the original tanker the Santee was converted from. I have now completed that and have "closed in' the hull which is now pretty much complete. Work has begun on the flightdeck
/gallery deck areas. Let's take a look........

Here's an overall view of the portside of the ship. Note that I have transferred the paper patterns of the sides of the hull to .040 styrene sheet. Sides were then installed on the hull.

A close up view of portside. The sides of the ship were fabricated from .020 styrene. The openings were then cut out and details added such the railings and cross braces. These side pieces were then attached to the hull. I then added all the piping, platforms etc. before a primer coat was added. Noto the gallery deck taking shape, still in raw white styrene.

This view shows the underside of the flightdeck. This is all styrene. Anchors and hawse lips are cast metal. Unfortunatly, most of this detail probably won't be seen, but it's there nevertheless.

Good shot of the bow, portside. Bow was shaped from autobody filler. Bulwark is thin styrene. Took me a while to get the shape correct. Note the anchor winch, cast metal consisting of 10 separate parts. Chain is brass.

On to the stern deck. Gun director platforms are scratchbuilt as well as the 40mm tubs. The usual array of cast metal and p/e fittings used here. The winch was bashed from a bunch of leftover parts I had here. Guns and other items will be added later on.

By the way, here's what Santee will look like when completed. Towards the end of December 1942, she was refitted with alot of modifications including alot more AA weaponry. I am doing this early version before that refit. Note in the photos the absence of the hull numbers. I have another photo of her underway which shows they are there. Perhaps they were blocked out of the photo?? Camo scheme is a rare MS17.
