Hi Guys,
No progress pics yet, and here's why..........
Image
A friend sent this pic to me to allow some clarification on Honolulu's turret markings fore and aft. Turret 4's top was entirely insignia red. The stripes on Turret 2 were Willow Green. This covers dates from 1938-40 roughly.
I was using a picture of what was PROBABLY NOT Honolulu beofre I saw this pic.
This pic is in fact USS Honolulu; CL-48. The original image is over 2 megs, so I had to reduce it to post here.
I cropped various parts of the full size image and printed them for study use. Here's the reason for my not posting any new build progress pics.
Image
As soon as I zoomed in on the aft superstructure, I found every detail on the stbd side to differ from the YMW Brooklyn kit.
Well, I had a choice; to leave it and build this model as is, (a commission model), or make it more correct. I chose the latter........why ohhhhh why???????
Also, Dave Hill and I got our corrected props from KTB; made from the Trumpeter THE SULLIVANS kit props. The props in THE SULLIVANS kits were grossly oversize for a 1/350 Fletcher Class DD, and the kit provided props for both the Trumpeter San Francisco / YMW Brooklyn's were ill shaped and underisized. These were re-shaped and sized to accurate dimensions for the Brooklyns, New Orleans and Wichita's.
These are very nice! Thanks Keith!
Also, I spent half a week gathering intel from 3 distinguished aviation experts regarding Honolulu's Curtis SOC's colors and markings. No less than one hour on the phone and 15 e-mails were exchanged!
It just keeps getting better!
Now, if I could only remember Divisions from Sections from Squadrons............................... :doh_1:
More soon when I've finished the aft deckhouse replacement details....

Because you are true to yourself!

When I obsess over some tiny detail on a 1/700 model of some obscure pre-dreadnought....

In truth --probably no one else would really notice or know....--but we--as builders...-- would always know..

-and that alone is enough reason to do it the hard way round!!!!!

Kudos- and look forward to seeing more progress soon

Tony,

Awesome work. I concur with Cadman, leave the grills in brass! What are you using for those grills, by the way? I think Wichita's are all molded as they should be on the YMW kit, but I can always use more grills.

Hey You's Guys!!
I appreciate the motivation and confirmation!
Devin,The grilles Used on the aft s/s are part of L'Arsenal's "Structural Parts set-2". The grilles, (of various sizes), take up about 60% of this particluar p/e set. http://www.larsenal.com/Source/catalogu ... 350_53.jpg
Also, the trailing edge of the bridge wings will require the perforated beams that recently became available from L'Arsenal.
I'm not only a L'Arsenal vendor, but I'm a client too!
I'm working on the vertical beams on the aft s/s that go along the vertical "tube" obviously for the Mk28 director.
More pics later.

Hi Guys,
The vertical re-inforcing perforated ribbing of the aft s/s is now in place.
I could not match anything already available in p/e, so I made these pieces.
The aft s/s is now closer to being accurate for Honolulu....
Image
I should probably not post quite so many pics of minimal difference, so I'll waith till the aft s/s ic somplete beofre posting again.
More soon.........Tony

Hi Guys,
Just a quick post. The aft deckhouse p/s is done. Soem minor differences between port and starbord side. The platform extensions that will be placed 03 level need to be re-worked; some new discoveries...
Here you can see the differences between a 1942 Brooklyn and a pre-war Honolulu.............

Next will be the platform extensions 03 level aft deckhouse....
Thanks for letting me share, Tony

Hi Guys,
Martin et all,
Baseball is my third favorite sport! I've seen Randy Jones in action too!
Last night I successfully modified the .50 cal platforms for the aft deckhouse, but I won't attach them till the larger part is painted.
Otherwise, I'm in for a masking headache. I used the perforated beams that seem to be in quite a few places on Honolulu, (after closer and closer inspection), so they'll be seen elsewhere too.
Randy Short insisted that I NOT lighten the Standard Navy Grey paint to match photos and accomodate scale effect, but I've got to Mr!! Don't tell him shhhhh.
Same for the Standard Deck Grey 20 on the steel decks.
The aft deckhouse is nearly complete, but for the mainmast. I have a machinist friend whom will make one for me in "other than plastic".
Oh yes, and I'll be doing what Dave Hill has so masterfully done; making my own gun directors!!
Pics soon, Tony

Hi Guys,
A little more work done on the aft deckhouse. I was ignoring subtle differences between the .50 cal platforms as I copied from the scale drawings and the actual ships photos I've been studying; till now.
Here is the port side .50 cal platform with the subtle side bulge and the perforated beam beneath. This change reflects the studying of Honolulu pre-war pics. Also, I determined that the main battery director platform was taller pre-war with the early style directors. I still don't know what these are..Mk??
The Mk34 directors used on Honolulu during WWII were different; wider than its' platform and taller than the previous director. Thus, the director tower was lowered to accomodate the Mk34 director. This assertion is founded only by my studying of drawings and pics.
Aft deckhouse with revised .50 cal platforms and taller MBD tower...
Image
I have moved on to the fwd MBD and identified a round base for it with slotted view-ports ala armored conning tower.
The MBD tower will be perched atop this and its height is lower than the aft MBD tower.

and ....
