A little bit of work on the main guns today, mainly showing comparison between the kit's versus LionRoar barrels.

Unfortunately, due to the brass barrels' density, one will have to glue them at a fixed elevation.

She now has bite! Also added a few bits and pieces to the forecastle.

The extra layers of paint on the barrels produced enough friction to allow them to be kept unglued so they can be elevated from time to time.

Well, if this was my model, I'd be chuffed to bits with it, although some way to go before you'll say 'job finished' this is looking great, and I can only agree the black and white config is quite striking, I can't remember if you said, will you have a crew for her ?

You handpainted the PE, right? That MUST be a hard task Timmy!

I sometimes handpaint PE and end up as long globby lines! How did you do it?

@Alec: No, no crew. Strictly an ideal model of the ship herself.

@Nick: I probably get long globby lines too The main problem I have is with the paint filling in the small open holes in areas such as the bottom of ladders' handrails. In those cases, I either run over the area again with the brush or just poke the film away. If I miss it while it's wet, I just poke it away with the knife tip.

An update! Chrysanthemum painted, anchor hoists done, various bits and pieces fore and aft, and the secondary 6" battery attached, though barrels are left unpainted for now.

Stern walkway. I replaced the crude underside supports with some thickish stretched-sprue I had laying around. The top and bottom are painted tan like the example on the Mikasa in her museum guise. Stern characters and railing intersections are just the natural brass. I'll probably coat them in Future to prevent further oxidization. Will also take care of the messy tan/black border when I go to paint the supports black.

Today I added the "cat walk" and torpedo net booms. Also painted the stern walkway support.

This basically concludes the structural part of the main ship's starboard side. Only thing left for this side are the small boats and their davits. And the masts, of course.

I was working on the forward mast lately. Most difficult part was doing the railing on the platform.

I am also lacking footropes for the lower yardarm - anyone know which PE set might have them? I've not had the opportunity to look at WEM's set, but it appears that all other companies' sets did not make footropes for the longer lower yardarm.

Today, we have the foremast painted and the anchor chains added. I used the chain that came with the kit. However, the links were much too round, almost circular, and so I had to flatten them.

Today, I decided the anchor area could use some extra detailing. I added some twisted electrical wire to imitate the support chains that keep the anchors from falling off. This is a technique that I think David Griffith talks about in his new book, and has mentioned several times in the various anchor chain threads on this forum. However, I first read about this technique from elsewhere, perhaps in one of Mike Ashey's books which are available from his website for free now.
