Calling all Virginia-class (CGN-38) fans

greetings:
I was trying to find some discuss on this class,, I see spruance and tycho, and of Virginia class ships..
When I was just a midshipman I was lucky enough to do a couple of weeks on her.. So does anyone have some better shots of her in final configuration.. I found this photo doing an internet search it says 1997 but it to far away... to help..

Money and manpower were the excuses for not modernizing the weapons on our nuclear cruiser force. But then again, if there was money to back-fit the nuke cruisers there would have been money for greater asset upgrades...

Depends on the era as the fit changed slightly for each ship over time. What time frame are you asking about?

Well I want to base my USS Arkansas the same period the Dragon's USS Virginia is based on.

Can anyone tell me what the highlighted areas are in this shot of the port side of CGN-40 from 1989?

I believe the platform on the foremast is for the ship's whistle and/or siren but I don't know what the other little bumps are.

I know that the middle area is one of her SLQ-32(v)3 units but what are the two little rectangles on posts to either side of it? Only thing I can think of is Sidekick but (v)3 is already installed so....

The platform on the mainmast looks like some sort of remote E/O sight.

So, how close am I? By the way, those pipes on the back of the top of the foremast, are those for the diesel generator(s)?

Cliffy, I have no idea what's on the mast platform. For the other, you've correctly ID'ed the SLQ-32 under the CIWS. I thought the two smaller objects might be a version of Sidekick, however, a photo of Mississippi in the Naval Inst Guide to Ships & Aircraft identifies the objects as telemetry receivers but it doesn't say what the telemetry is for. Sorry, best I can offer.

They are in-flight telemetry transmitters/receivers installed as part of the NTU upgrade to the Tartar-D AAW system. This enables the ship to guide missiles to the general area of the target without having to illuminate the target. For example, the ship can fire the missiles at the target, tell the missiles where to go in flight, and then provide terminal illumination instead of continuous illumination. So, this elliminates the need for "beam riding". Aegis currently does this through the SPY panels so those transmitters are no longer used. However, the Kidds in the custody of Taiwan, do still use them with a highly advanced form of NTU Tartar-D.

Regarding the mast pipes, my money goes that they are the exhausts of the safety valves from the steam systems. The diesel generator would propably have an axhaust at the side... I have no particular knowledge of this class of ships propulsion plant so take in mind that I might be totally wrong...

I'm still very curious on what the object is on the mainmast, to the right of the picture. It reminds me of the Tin Man television sensor that is found on the Kirov class. Anyone have any thoughts?

The device below the An/SPQ-9A and above the AN/SPG-60 is radio frequency receiver. It listens for radar signals. The round opening allows it to trap a wide range of frequencies. Good for identifing radars being used in the area, also let you know somebody has a lock on you.

The large mast pipes are not for diesel generator exhaust or steam safeties. As mentioned the diesel exhaust was out the side closer to the diesels.
I cannot for the life of me remember what exactly they are for though- Im thinking it was a stack for the auxiliary steam boiler which supplied heating steam for the ship.
I wish I could find my notes when I was studying for Surface Warfare- I wrote down many of the radars and sensor arrays on the exterior.
Will post if I find more info.
