Hi again,

No modeling progress today! I would only like to say, wow, I�m well pleased by all your compliments and the lots of views and posts to my USS New thread.
I have learned a lot looking to all the fine models displayed by you all on MW.com! It was a great privilege to share my progress building this fine kit with you all - Thanks

@Carl a nice compliment by a great modeler! I have seen you very well done USCGC Bering Strait � a very nice model indeed!
No problem to tell you again! I took the radar antennas from WEMs USN WWII radar set (take a look to pg. no. 2). Al l the gun details are from GMMs wonderful PE set. For the rest of the details I will also use most of the GMM PE.

Nice work and good conversion... I understand all your pains on upgrading the USS New...
But the final result will be a good one, for sure!

Really cool work on the New!

I read you used the Corsair 5" resin pieces to replace Mt.52 for this. I am looking around on Pacific Front for this part. Did it come from the closed duel 5"/38 mounts or the singles?

Dave, I have used the single 5�/38 � box #350-001! The part fits well to the new Mk. 15 Hedgehog! Thanks for your comment

Some more progress on USS New, today I have finished the port platform at the aft stack. Normally two Oerlikon guns were fitted to the platform, but according to Stefan Terzibaschitsch�s �Destroyers of the U.S. Navy�, USS New carried only three 20mm Oerlikon around the 1950s. Two, one port and one starboard of the bridge, and the third at the gun tub aft of the starboard 40mm quad, I believe?! But what was placed than at the port platform? Maybe Terzibaschitsch was wrong? And New carried more than three Oerlikons?
Does anybody have an idea � any information is welcome!

At first I have placed on 20mm Oerlikon and a 24� searchlight on the platform. I used L�Arsenals wonderful 20mm twin gun set to replace the kit parts.
The searchlight is a white metal part from Paper Lab, really nice detailed and very clean casted!

The USN started to remove 20-mm guns from destroyers in ABOUT 1953. So, timeframe and which DDE "sub-group" NEW was in would dictate how many and where the twin 20-mm guns were mounted.

It seems to me the photo was taken around 1950 - 1955. She was in DesRon 36 at that time. You couldn't see small details very well but you can see the tripod mast, Mk. 15 trainable hedgehog, torpedo tubes and HF/DF mast aft. Most of the photos you will find on News web page were taken from starbord and not from port.

regarding to the number of US News 20mm Oerlikons I have reviewed a lot of sources. Consequential I decided to put five 20mm Oerlikon to the model. I used also the tripod base from Lion Roar instead of the gun pivot. The barrals and the PE comes from L'Arsenal nice set. I have added plastic rod as a pin on the bottom for fixing the gun to the hole in the deck. The other pin is the guns base. There are a lot of parts to finish and it is time-consuming to make progress. Now the PE is fixed to the boat and the loockout chairs are finished with some extra details in form of binoculars. Also finished with some more detail, the three Mk. 51 gun director tubs. More and more New wake up to life.

there is always a bit of time to find to work on the model but now I have finished the K-gun and Mk. 9 DC racks. It was easy to bend the parts with my Hold and Fold bending tool. The racks lacks the charges, but I have only styrene in diameter 1.5mm at the moment and that isn�t thick enough. Next I have made two lockers that were placed in front of the bridge, next to the Mk. 15 hedgehog. I�ve modified the lockers (unused lockers from sprue D) with some styrene. Next I�ve added parts often seen on photos. First, platform edges to keep the aft legs of the tripod mast. Second, clamps and hinges on the 40mm gun tubes to hold the tubs canvas covers. Attempts to make the clamps/hinges from 1/700 scale railing failed. At first I thought about making the parts from plastic stripes and fine bras, but then I decided to use stretched sprue instead of brass. That's it for now

I am wondering if you have any plans of loading up the 40mm ammo racks or leave them empty?


And this may be a general question for eveyone, out there. I just started wondering this, lately, after putting them on my USS Oyster Bay AGP-6. I can't recall seeing any models where the modeler has inserted something in the racks to replicate the ammo ready for use. I covered mine with canvas, instead, mostly because it will be in a diorama and "in action" somewhat.

Most of my ants and spiders who are working to finish USS New are in holiday, so I think (just now) I will leave the racks empty

Joking apart, a question I haven't thought about before. I have thought only for making canvas covers, but I have dismissed it because I would like to see the fine details of the racks!

On most of the photos showing the ships in a harbor or a yard, the racks are emtpy because of the unloaded amunition! But on employment they sould be ready for action. Mhhh, I would like to display USS New on high seas - ok, time will tell

quite the converse! Yes, please show us your photos and information you have. The photos are really amazing and, I think, not only for me of interest! I really like the second one because of the sea in the backround and the he sailors on watch, resting at their gun, a photo with a fine atmosphere!

Here are cropped images from the larger plan drawing of the AVP 40mm ammo rack canvas'. They may be way, too detailed for 1/350 but, interesting none-the-less.

One idea that Rui gave me was to open one or two of the canvas covers with a flap to show part of the rack detail, below it. Full or empty, this would be a nice detail. It was too, late for my model.

By the way, I used dark (brown) decal stripes that I made and printed out on m inkjet printer and then used Solvaset to soften it and to take shape around and under the rack. I then used Model Master Acrylic Navy Gloss Gray for the final color and a dull coat over that. I have found that Navy Gloss Gray is a little olive drab and little dark gray and is a believable color when refering to black and white or sepia toned photographs.

Regarding to the racks, I will leave them as they are now on my model because I don't want to have another site of works on my USS New. But I will keep it for my next projects!

I think that if you make (IMHO) some of the racks covered with canvas and with the flip open so that the details can be seen, and have the "trouble" to make some ammo clips (one and the resin copy a few more) it would be a much interesting situation.
When on sea, and if not on battle stations, most ready ammo lockers are canvas covered

You are detailing your DDE in a very good way.
I am following this built with much interest (even if there's no DD/DE in the next projects list)
