Very nice built. Beautiful weathering, too... especially good looking torpedo. How do you get the wonderful streaks/weather on the torpedoes and the boat?

When I painted the basic colors I followed them with streaks of the base color lightened. I repeated lightly with a more lightened mix. I used WEM enamals thinner 1:1 with lacquer thinner.

Then I painted the numbers and stars.

After all the painting was done, I coated several times with Future Floor Wax and let it dry for a couyple of days.

The weathering was then done with Raw Umber Oil paint thinned with some mineral spirits. I just slathered it on and then wiped it off in the direction of the streaking i wanted. Selected areas were done with brushes and q-tips.

After that dried I sprayed with Testor's dull coat thinned with 15% lacquer thinner.

The torpedoes were harder. The warheads were done just like the boat but the bodies were a lot of trial and error.

I painted and weathered the warheads then masked them off once it was all good and dry. I used low-tack tape.

I painted the bodies with MM non-buffing steel metalizer and sealed them using their sealer. Let it all dry.

Then I mixed some flat black with thinner and dabbed it on the body. With a wide (1/2") flat brush I started pulling the mix around the body. I kept doing this until enough had been wiped off by the brush to get the look i wanted. I would wipe the brush on a towel to remove the black paint mix as it built up on the brush. I tried to keep all the brush marks perendicular to the axis of the body then finished with a little smearing action.

After this dried i put a drop or 2 of yellow food dye in my airbruch cup filled with Future. I controlled the saturation by doing several light coats and allowing them to dry between coats. The color build with each coat. If you go too far, anything with amonia (409) will remove the future. The desired effect was to try to duplicate the yellow "varnish" like coating they put on the bodies. The bodies seemed to have some black grease-like coating covered with a varnish, or maybe it was all one coating. Anyway, the Future gave the bodied a glossy, yellow tint that doesn't show up real well in the photos.

Getting the black right is just a lot of playing with it. You can clean it off with mineral spirits if you are gentle.

I'm pleased to announce that Garth has a new feature up on PTBoatWorld.com. I found a document a couple of months ago that laid out plans to convert PTs to minelayers in forward areas. I've converted it to a web page, complete with 18 schematic drawings, and we've got it posted for everyone to read at http://www.ptboatworld.com/USNMinelayers.htm

We both hope you enjoy it and maybe someday we'll see a "what if?" out of the work.

I'm not sure is anybody is interested but Dick on the PT Boats Inc board has put together some fantastic 2008 calendars with some great, detailed drawings of PT-Boats. I got mine today and could not be more pleased.

Hi all,
I posted aquestion in the main folder looking for 1/72 scale Mk 13 torpeodes to replace the undersized one in the WEM kit. Anybody with an interest in PT boats know of a source?
Thanks,
Ed

:wave_1: Hi Ed,
Have you tried Squadron mail order?? they are also on the internet (google squadron) they have a Mk 13 in resin in 1/48th and in 1/72. I have the 1/48th for a TBD-1 and it is nice.
Hope this helps

Dan,
I searched Squadron for "torpedo", "mk13", "ordnance" and a couple of other keywords and only found the 1/72 WEM set, which is my problem, a True Details Mk13 in 1/48 and an Accurate Miniatures Ordnance set which included a Mk 13 in 1/48. Nothing else. If you know of the 1/72 version I would appreciate the number if you have it.
Thanks,
Ed

I've just today started work on Revell's PT-117 (same kit as PT-109) and have a question about the torpedo tubes. They have hemispherical domed covers/hatches at the "muzzle" end of the tubes, whilst the plans and photographs in "Allied Coastal Forces vol.2" show them either open (without covers) or possibly with flat hatches. On the other hand, all the PT boat models I can find in the MW gallery have these domed hatches on the tubes.
Would an operational PT boat be more likely to have the hatches on or off?

Try these:
http://www.ptboatworld.com/PT_Boat_Info ... chemes.htm
http://www.ptboatworld.com/PT_Boat_Info ... flage.html

I sent Garth a disk recently that (I think) should allow him to add design 5P.

Thanks very much... :wave_1: :wave_1:

Were there any PT boats with camouflage based on grey/typical navy colours? Or camouflage according to regular navy camouflage types such as MS-32 ? That would be an interesting project...

Early in the war they ordered remaining stocks of 5-D to be used up on smaller craft like PTs, and some of the PTs used around the Normandy invasion were 5-O Ocean gray with 20B Deck Blue decks. Then you have these photos: http://www.researcheratlarge.com/Photos/PT109.html

Thanks again for the quick response.

I think i will go for the "army" style camo.... I will use Humbrol enamels... When I decide the pattern and the colour numbers I will post a scetch of my camo and the colours... :wave_1:

fanatstic model, aray of weaponary is amazing and i often wonder how the decks withstood the recoil of such weapons giver the recoil pressure of the oerlikon was 8 tons per square foot.

If I can be a little pedantic, the guns them selves especially the Brownings and Oerlikons are 'too gunmetal' in colour with e the actual colour being closer to black with metailic washes to highlight wear on side bars, cocking areas etc.

A common problem when it comes to weapons that they are not gunmetal as a pure colour but a weird sort of black often witha tarnished look.

BoFors 40mm weapons were painted so it doesn't really apply but having spent some years working with the other weapons I always tended to find painting them to represent the real thing far more tricky than just afew coast of 'gun metal'

Cracking model all the same :thumbs_up_1:
