Sounds like I've had the same problem. I was using the Prismcolor pencils, but the color won't adhere well. Maybe something to do with the surface preparation ?

Good afternoon, ajkochev!

I will have 3 models for this fine thread.

The first will be a 100% scratch build with a hull number of CGN-42.

The second will be a CAG built with 85% of a 1/350 USS Radford kit.

The third will be a CAG built with 25% of a 1/350 Dragon Mobile Bay, 25% 1/350 Trumpeter USS Momsen with and the rest scratch built.

All 3 will have PE and Veteran Models Phalanx, Harpoon, RHIBs, and ECM countermeasure pieces.

2012 is going to be a crazy year! WHEW!!!

My offical entry photo of Maya, taken a week ago. She's now ready to paint, as seen over on my build thread.

It would be nice to finish her in time to do my own Aikoku Maru.

Thanks Guys -

The deck was sprayed with Humbrol #94, then drybrushed with Humbrol #93 (which I would probably skip next time since the colors are too close). Artist's pencils are Prismacolor in "goldenrod" and "sand" from Michael's craft store @ $1.65 ea.

I did not use a straight edge but just followed the plank lines in the deck freehand which kept the marks straight. Important to draw over flat paint since a gloss surface will not have enought bite to make the color stick. They seem to hold up pretty well, under masking tape (so far).

My official start photos....

USS Albany, CG-10 1/700 from Dragon.
Image

The "Tall Ladies", in my opinion are 3 of the most beautifull warships ever built, I am very happy to have this new kit from Dragon, I can only hope one day they will release her in 1/350th!!

Construction started tonight with the gluing of the forward deck section to the hull....
The other superstructure parts are just dry fitted. I love the one piece molding of the major parts, it will make construction and painting easier.
Image

Detail is pretty good and the kit comes with a small p/e fret, that will be used along with a Gold Medal Models set.
Image

Size comparison, next to Dragons USS Ingraham kit which is under construction, I will add USS Long Beach to this pair and have all three done by summer.

Good afternoon.
I would like to participate with the model Yahagi from Hasegawa in scale 1/350.
The model has not yet begun.

The Albany is a very nice ship.

The Pittsburg has been put in the dock for its construction. Preparation of the hull and prop guards with sprue.

Kometa, not to take away from your work on the Albany, but can you post materials used and measurements on makeing that jig. It looks perfect for working on 1/700 ships! :thumbs_up_1:

I'm looking forward to "all" of your in progress pictures. There will be a lot of different types of ships in this build.

Dan, I'm looking forward to seeing your Albany progress. I would like to build it but 1/700 is to small for my old eyes. I really
liked their Long Beach that I build in the "Cold War GB" but I really had to struggle to get it done. Oh, for a larger 1/350
scale ship>

Guess I'll enter with a 1/350 Varyag. Still waiting for it to arrive from across the pond. GMM will be providing the PE details and my usual combination of Valejo and Modelmaster Paints. Thinking of a wood deck and brass barrels too

Today is Wednesday, so I spent a little time the San Francisco. The 5"s are done, I filled the back side of the lockers in with white putty, and was able to work on the foremast and the main mast.

When my varyag arrives I'll participate in this build as well as the Russian build with it, can't justify cracking out my Averoff (1/700th) just yet. Not enough proper references! Although if we are allowed to enter started kits I never did get any further on my Ryurik II... mayve I'll use that for this and the Varyag for fun.

Well I've changed my mind on what I'm building. I present the 1/700 YS Masterpieces Averoff.

I've started by cleaning up the resin parts and trying to match up the bridge area. This kit (along with more recent combrig offerings) has to be the best I've ever seen. The resin is paper thin where it needs to be, the photo etch is simply second to none and the directions are better than most plastic kits. My only gripe is no locator pins for the stacks, but that's really not that big of a deal.

I've drilled out the hawespipes for chain as well. My kit suffered from a slight overpour because it's waterline so I had to sand that off as well. This will mostly be OOB because, everythings included! I'm thinking setting it in a calm sea with a few of the ships boats returning. If anyone has good information on the innacuracies in the kit (if there are any) or useful photo's I'd appreciate it.

Not much to report yet, I have been drilling out port holes and windows, and the Prinz Eugen has a TON of them. Thought I was building a cruise liner when I finally finished the hull. Progress starting soon....I hope.
Chris

Currently in the dock:
1/350 Prinz Eugen
1/350 USS Missouri
1/350 Spruance Class
1/350 HMS King George V

In the Stash:

Some Averoff updates, photos to be posted later. Added midships vents and am working on the boat cradles. Work on the bridge tonight, mostly PE parts. Some of the PE supports for underneath the bridge snapped off my tweezers and flew into the abyss so the accuracy of the kit has somewhat lessened. Really trying to cram as much detail as quickly as possible into this kit to start some of these other projects. I'm not entirely happy with the Pale Grey Blue Vallejo paint that I'm using for the hull/structure, but apparently it's accurate. I much prefer the dark grey that Jim B. used in his Averoff build!
