Forgot to add, in the pictures you also see an air intake. I don't have any construction pictures of it.

Thanks, but the build may not continue like this from now onwards. The fall semester starts this Monday, and it is going to be a busy one. At the most, I might get to work on this for project for the next one week or two. My professors for sure know how to keep the students busy!!

Looking good...and such fast work. But glancing at the stats of the boat, your model is about 56cm long and 10cm beam, displacing maybe 18oz (500g) when made?!
Do you see any potential problems with stability given all that topwork?

Not really sure how much this thing is going to weigh. When I was building the super structure, I got a feeling that it is going to be haevy. I used thick plastic and styerne to give it some strength, but never thought about being top heavy until your post.
Today, instead of speculating, I decided to put it to test. So, I went ahead and put the model in the pool. It appreared untstable at first. Carefully placing some weight at the bottom of the hull seems to add some stability. This brings the model to its waterline mark when it is fully loaded (judging from the photos of the ship).
In short, by carefully plasing some ballast, the model appears to be resonably stable. I say this becuase I don't know if the situation is going to be any different when she sails.
Thanks for bringing this up, I would have never thought about it. Really shows how much I know about model ships!
Today, I made the rear exhausts, running hardware, rudder and propeller. I will post some pictures later, or may be tomorrow. A lot of clean up needs to be done for things to look nice in the photos

TommyL.
Just went over to the Millport website to know more about the CNC. Not sure what a 5 axis mill can do. I wish I had a simple 2 axis set up that could cut shapes in upto 3mm thick aluminum when I built my 1/8 scale RC bike. I eneded up using hacksaw blade and file, until my fingers blead

.
What are you planning to build with this CNC? Is it mainly for ship modelling? Or are you into something more exotic like helicopters etc?

I am eagerly waiting for the progress on your Kiev. I would love to model the sister ship Gorshkov when she will be refitted for the Indian Navy (ofcourse, in the future, when my skill levels get there). I haven't found many references to this ship, hence your therad is going to be very useful.

Hi kalkurap It wont be to long before a start on Kiev proper can be made. I'm just putting the finishing touches to a project that's been in build for far to long. At the moment I'm waiting for the running gear for Kiev, 4 prop shaft , A frames and props. I looked at the Gorshkov as a build but I really did not have enough information to make the project viable. With Kiev there's plenty of photos available to make a reasonably accurate model.

Dave there's plenty of info on Gorshkov! I even have a Russian book about her, with every type of drawing included.
Of course what she will be like after the upgrade is still cause for speculation as there are only pictures of models...
I hope you will show us your "far-too-long-project" when it gets finished!!
Regards
Roel

Hi,
Too many things happened last year for me, so no progress was made on the build. Things have settled for now, hence the build continues. I will upload some pictures soon.
Meanwhile, can anyone tell me where in the US I can source some small propellers? I am looking at dia of about an inch. It is nice to be back on this site.
Thanks,
Prasanna.

To answer my own question, I found a link on the Supplies and Resources thread to
http://www.loyalhannadockyard.com/ that had brass propellers. Thanks for looking anyway.

Chenhao17173,
Thanks for the comments. I haven't updated this thread in a long time and that is a real shame. Following are a couple of photos I took recently. I have a lot more small parts built up, will post some more photos soon.
