Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
For the Academy 1/350 1942/1943 Warspite, what are the RN color designations for the light and dark gray colors. Was this only a two color scheme? Any further thoughts on colors, paints and drawings would be helpful. Any thoughts on the Pontos or WE Photo Etch sets? Thanks, Rich

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi Rich.
The Warspite at this time (1943)used the two colour=RN02 AP507B and RN 03 AP507C colours.
This By Les Brown's book on the QE in ship craft.
And other sources say the same for this time.
But 1942 warspite had same paint use but in diff configeration, more of a chequed pattern.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I've recently added the Trumpeter 1/350 Queen Elizabeth to the collection, the instructions say to paint the wooden decks tan, but shouldn't they painted grey?

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi John.
Well again tan would be the right colour for the QE as well as the Warspite.
I believe all this class had wood colour decks so tan would be good.
I will be useing the Artos wood deck for this ship.
On the QE and Valiant in 1943 with the new domed turret AA guns, there decking was in the grey colour and the armoured deck showed but the rest was wood deck.
Hope this helps.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Thanks for the quick reply. I thought that by 1943 the Royal Navy would be camouflaging the decks of its ships like the US Navy did with their ships, but if you say they were left unpainted the tan it
shall be.
Thanks v. much, John

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hehe yep the US navy did.
But maybe the Brit Navy wanted to give the sailors something to do ,'like scrub the decks', or not mess up the paintwork!!!!!.
What ever the case, most if not all our ships had the wood decks to the end of WW II and further I believe.

I will ALWAYS defer to the experts on RN camo, but decks are NOT a simple matter.
Some were camouflaged, some plain painted, some darkened (fuel oil ?????) and some left untreated *(but were they cleaned ?).
Good luck.

Just a quick question,When the aircraft arrangements were removed ,did they leave the hanger doors in place,or replace them?
Thanks Phil

Don't know exactly, but I did remember this IWM image showing the former hangar of HMS Malaya in 1943 (aircraft facilities removed end of 1942). Note the split-level floor in the hangar and some chairs and a piano. Here I'd say the doors are still in place.

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Has anyone compared to Trumpy hull to the Academy hull in 1/350 ? , the Academy hull is about 6.5mm shorter at deck level - or did I miss a previous post ??

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Just a follow up on my last post, the trumpy hull measures up almost exactly - 196.9 meters divided by 350 = 562.5 mm . The Academy hull is 552.5 ??

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hello Ensign Jay,
While overall length of Warspite is 639'5" (=194.9 m, without sternwalk) and it reduces to 557 mm in 1/350, box side indicate that "full length" of the model is 558 mm. Maybe this figure is including sternwalk and almost identical to 557 mm. Perhaps, kit designer of Academy applied scale length of 558 mm (which isn't including sternwalk in actual ship) to that of model which is including sternwalk.
OTOH overall length of Queen Elizabeth is 640'10.5" (=195.34 m, without sternwalk) and it reduces to 558 mm in 1/350. Overall length of QE including sternwalk is 646'1" (=196.9 m) and it reduces to 562.6 mm and this figure is almost identical that of hull itself of Trumpeter QE. (QE retained her sternwalk when when her large refit completed in 1941) Trumpeter designer is also confusing meaning of "overall length" with or without sternwalk, but he applied scale length including sternwalk to that of hull itself.
So in my humble opinion Academy is shorter than it should be and Trumpeter is longer than it should be
But still I prefer Academy Warspite hull because its bow flare and shape of bulge seems much better than those of Trumpeter QE. Also I don't like plating mould of Trumpeter QE. It is only shameless scaledown copy of 1/128 Fleetscale hull. I believe hull plating mould in 1/350 scale should be more delicate.

Mitsuaki Kubota

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi Mitsuaki, thankyou for the explanation ,I beleive you have straightened it out for me and your findings make sense, BTW do you think the Trumpeter tooloing was made by Fujimi or similar or did they just use the same design template ( maybe the hull mould was made under subcontract ) ?. I think each kit has pros and cons , the bow plating on the Trumpeter QE is not super but at the same time , it's not as bad as the Hood , the stem profile is different between the two QE kits as well . I have lent my copy of TAOTS HMS Warspite to a freind for his build but I will have a close look when I get it back this week end.
But still after all we still have not one but two 1/350 QE class battleships to build , I think thats a great thing to have. I have , like so many model ship builders, been waiting for many years for kits like these, I will be building both for sure , so it's happy days eh .
cheers Jay
Now all we need in 1/350 is a WW1 QE , an Iron Duke , a Nelson or Rodney .......

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Hi Ensign Jay,
I don't know about relationship between Trumpeter and Fujimi. I had heard that Fujimi kits are "made in Japan" but another rumor says they are ordering tools China and only injecting in Japan. In any case I don't believe that Trumpeter and Fujimi has common design template between their kit designers, although some "business partnership" between sales managers would be existing.
BTW, I vote Academy Warspite stern as far as comparing AOTS.
Firstly I scanned 1/150 scale stern structure drawing of AOTS Warspite (p. 64) and reduced it to 1/347.5 scale size (for Trumpeter QE) and 1/354.45 scale (for Academy Warspite). Then I print it and compared with each kit.
Perhaps attached pictures are telling themselves than any depiction. Though not perfect Academy Warspite is better of the two.
Despite of these shortcomings, I agree you that we have nice opportunity to build two QE Class battleships from kit. I hope our discussion will be feed back to their kit design someday

Mitsuaki

Hi Mitsuaki
That is not as bad as I was thinking , thankyou for the clarification . The bow looks like the end of the ship with more apparent differences, now that I have my glasses on !
. I have my AOTS book back now so I will do some checking too.
Do you think they ever look in these forum pages ?
once again thankyou for your help regards Jay

Re: Calling all HMS Queen Elizabeth class fans
Has anyone notice the glaring mistake trumpeter made to the rear end of the flag deck on the forward superstructure?
In june 1943 it was modified going from the outer edge of the flag deck to the rear legs of the forward mast and across between the legs,There are pictures of Queen elizabeth in british battleships of world war two,on page 248/9 it's shows
an aerial view which clearly shows that mistake!
