Well I just got the new Royal Navy cruiser HMS Calcutta in 1/700 from Trumpeter and I hope they did a decent job on her. Wish more of the earlier cruisers would be done in plastic.

What bugs me is that we all know that Trumpeter uses slide molding, but they refuse to use that to mold funnels, etc. Funnels would look so much neater when slide-molded! In the case of the above Exeter, Trumpeter has provided PE cranes, and depth charge racks, but didn't include PE aircraft catapults - just ugly old injected plastic ones! DUHHH!

Far from the first time! I believe they did the same thing with their 1/700 Z7; released as 1942 with paint guide to match... but the ship has a round bridge. IE, it's a prewar Z7.

As mentioned above they use slide molding and of course release many a version of some kits, with parts alternating as required for the ship or time period... so why not offer alternative versions these days? Seems they don't bother anymore.

So those impacted this is just to let you know that replacement is available, possible and makes this great kit not a miss, but a hit.

As mentioned above, all info I posted in CASF thread, dont want to spam the thread the idea is to let those know who got wrong deck to not despair with the kit, it is solvable without scratchbuilding:

And yes, ebay seller just calmly sent me the correct part separately (from China). Flyhawk supplied him with the part on request, I just sent picture of the part and picture of the part on the plans to demonstrate they are not the same, it was enough. I was one of those people who pre ordered it - and Im sure Flyhawk is aware and newer kits will be ok. The part arrives in its own packaging - not part of any other sprue set - hence it seems like a very easy fix for them.

Still, the logic of building WW1 stuff in WL and WW2 - in Full hull. I dont get it... Is it that the Jutland people all table top play them and dont build them out and WW2 people want more? I dont get FH logic at all in offering Jutland ships in WL only and everything else in FH.

Probably just ships of those years came without the lower half, only WW2 period they figured out there can be more ship and built the lower bit too.

According to "Model Shipwrights" ICM will be releasing a 1/350th KFK Kriegsfischkutter (armed trawler).

The model seems to be rather crude, and for me will need a decent PE set.

My goodness, the FlyHawk Iron Duke is certainly a bolt out of the blue I'm surmising they must have done their research and determined there was a viable market for it, as opposed to other offerings they could have unveiled.

However, I just hope when they (eventually ??) release HMS Vanguard, they don't get their wires crossed and produce the ill fated WW1 version, as opposed to THE HMS Vanguard of 1946

Dave, I'd certainly like to see Iron Duke in its VERY different WWII fit. Do you think there would be many takers in Blighty for that?

My goodness, that's an interesting thought - I've been going through all my books and I can't find any pictures or details as to how she looked, as a beached AA platform at Scapa Flow, although it's certainly an intriguing idea.

I'm surmising the new release itself could be 'kitbashed' to any such WWII appearance, although that would require someone with more single-minded determination tan myself, as I tend to view FlyHawk models as almost sacrosanct as they are.

Altogether; it would be great if, space allowing, you wanted to build a diorama of Scapa in, for example, 1941 with the Hood and Prince of Wales waiting there before going out to meet the Bismarck.

In theory it shouldnt be too difficult to get a WW2 fit (just remove B and Y turrets and modify slightly the aft superstructure) and it is certainly an intriguing thought. But I have also struggled on sources. There is a good ariel picture of her in 1939 when she had a twin 5.25" installed on Y barbette but it had its own barbette which raises the 5.25" turret high enough to block the traverse of x turret. Easy enough perhaps to replicate but done accurately and it is just going to look like a terrible bit of scratch building... Beached at Scapa Flow I have found a single blurry photo in BA Burt's British Battleships 1919-1946 It appears to show pom poms (Quads?) on the quaterdeck and roof of X turret and the 5.25" has gone (there were in short supply) but the barbette remains possibly with another pop pom installed on it, but it really isnt a great photo. But its an intriguing idea and (I think) doable if you dont mind a bit of guesswork.

The photo in RA Burt's British Battleships 1919-1945 is reproduced slightly more clearly in his earlier British Battleships 1919-1939 (and also appears, at https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EHDyUsyX0AE ... me=900x900, somewhat blurred); it looks like the multiple AA mountings on "Y" barbette and "X" turret are quadruple 0.5" guns. She also had a platform high on the port side of the after superstructure which looks like it might have carried a light AA mounting. Her 6" guns are absent (although they had been in place when she was bombed), and there were a few huts on her upper deck amidships.
