Jim, get the rules of the shop put up, if it happens again then action is needed, like below.

Take a model into house, set up work area in kitchen or dining table area, await complaints at or before meal time, tell her she is welcome to eat in the shop I she can find space.

Problem is that it doesn't work. Been there myself with two "better halves", and my mother was exactly the same. Don't know if it is an universal trait, or if I just have unconsciously picked women who behaves like my mother....

Cleaned out the shop and put the stuff in another area of the barn, my barn is set up into 3 area's. 1/2 is open bay while the other half is set up with 2/3's as my shop and the remander as closed storage access from outside. the situation I had mentioned before has been delt with, I have put a hasp and lock on the shop door and only I have the key. Now nobody can go in there unless I allow it or am with them......

I have started to design a layout or floor plan for what I want to do with the shop, I have two or three idea's i'm toying with. I have some bench and tool storage plans to work out, mainly depends on cost of materials for what I want to do but I promise you on thing this is the year I get it all done. That is my New years resolution.

Don't worry about being poor, I grew up very poor as well and made me a better person for it, Makes me appricate what I have now as an adult. But, if you are really wanting to have your own build room, shop then start planning it now and when you are grown and on your own you can set it up and / or build it the way you want. I didn't have my own shop till a year ago, and I'm 41. So, remember that hardly anyone here has just been handed a shop or room, they love the building process and have strived to build up what they have. Find out what works for you and where you want to go with building models and start your plans on your own shop, look at all the shops here and the way they are set up for the work that is done in them, and above all else remember these few things:

1. funcitionality
2. praticality
3. realistcally

Design to be cost effective, I actually started out with supplies in a box, and news paper on mama's kitchen table.
Keep your head up, and dream of your model work and work on your model dream.....

im so jealous of this people,, they have their own working room..
before i had a room, but my parents told me we need a border to share expenses on our rent..
now im sleeping in the living room in a sofa-bed..

its so hard to be poor...

My friend,
you do not need an elaborate shop to create a model. The art lies within. It is one's hands that creates the magic and doesn't matter in what room it is created. Only just recently have I put together a shop after 20 some years of modeling. Some of my best work in the past was done on either our kitchen table or office desk. Do not be discouraged, be inspired.

my shop is more of a get away from the Real world, and a place to relax and recharge without interruption.

Years ago on a saturday, newly married, sitting at the kitchen table putting together an Albatros DV. wife watching TV. She came in and said with disgust "I wish you would do something more grown up"; put model away, called up my friend the wanna be playboy and left. came back at dawn a little worse for wear and wearing a T shirt from the local strip joint. Nothing was said. the next Friday after dinner she gave me a Me 109 and said " here I thought you might want to work on this and went and watched some TV. We heve been married over 35 years.

Good afternoon gentalmen,
When out to the shop today and gave it a good cleaning, then started moving things around and decided my son needed to have his own station and so, I set him up with his own bench, peg board and some tools. Went to pick him up from work and told him he had a surprise waiting for him at home. He went out to the shop and was totally blown away, now he is out there right now working on his Titanic model he just bought. He is so excited about his "own work station". He is already planning on what he is going to get when he get paid.

I found myself running out of work space especially since my daughter is building her 1/1200 Titanic, so I went to Lowes for a couple saw horses and plywood for a new bench but I found this instead. Welcome addition to the shop.

very nice, I tool have been eyeing that at my local lowes, I missed the Christmas sale they had when they had them for $159.00.
They are really nice and the work space is smooth.

Yes I like it overall. The drawers are not the greatest, not that smooth but I guess overtime they will be OK. Assembly is extensive so be prepared. I would have preferred the stainless version but it was $100 more as you know so black works just fine for me. I highly recommend this work bench.

That is true about the drawers, I'm an industrial Machinic and my tool box at work is a Kobalt, the drawer bearing slides are junk, and I noticed that they have the same style in the work bench, but as long as you don't over load the drawers {weight} wise they should be fine, also quick tip, lube the bearing slides periodically with some phnumatic oil or some sort of light weight oil. But still all in all it is a nice work bench.....

Speaking of workbenches, this is the Harbour Freight model on sale often at $139 (if it isn't on sale, wait a few months). The drawers seem fairly durable, and operate smoothly (and hold my heavy metal forming dies quite well). If the peg holes bother you, fill with a dowel and cut off. My only fault with it was I had to trim 3/8" off the edges to fit my clampy things. Tis a bit heavy, but I was able to transport and assemble by myself.

Hi Guys,

I remember reading through this and seeing guys who have minimum work areas for one reason or another, I like sitting in front of my TV and using my little foldable table for meals and yes building, so after a bit of thinking I threw this together, Table cost about $9.00, wood about $15.00, I will put a cutting mat on the front section, It is light and able to be moved around and it also still folds if needed.

I was looking at the work table you made, I like the concept you have there. Can I offer you a helpful idea for you plastic stock, get a piece of 1" or 1-1/4" pvc pipe cut it to about 6" and fix it to you table, you can add as many as you need for the sizes most used. that way you have more room on the back section. Overall though I do like what you have done there.
