Hi Martin Thanks for your kind words . Long way to go but the painting is one of the jobs ready to do and there's plenty of that. I am going to give WEM a ring as I know they will supply the right shades for the Kiev in the time period 1985. At the moment I'm working on the elevator shaft , problem is the information is very sketchy so some guess work will be the order of the day.

Hiya Dave,

I've finally succeeded in finding a video of the Trap Door radar. Unfortunately it was only shown in a video and I can't take screenshots of that.
From what I saw, hold your desk tight now, the lid has a Front Door guidance radar (as the one mounted on the Slava class main mast forward) underneath it. Practically it comes up after the launch of the Sandbox missile, with the radar sitting on a support that is connected to the door.
Now that you know it, will you make it???? I'll try to get that video or part of it to you.

You have got me confused about the scale. For all these months I thought this is a 1/144 scale build. But it is 1/96 per the title of the thread. Which one is correct?

As I need to conclude a number of pressing projects , one of which is a book due at the publishers at end of April for publication in the fall of 06. At last we on the move again
The Boat recess and davits
As mentioned before the boat recess or bay is aft , both port and
starboard and was formed with the GRP hull. Trick is �How to install
all the equipment and detail in a space surrounded on three sides�
Simple make a removable recess.. This is how it was done.

Next stage was to select the material for this job

The internal space is measures and using 1 mm styrene the inner walls
are cut to size. This takes into account the sloping ends and dividing wall

The recess is divided into two bays , each housing a different type of boat.


With all the section bonded together the inner lining { Boat recess]
can be easily removed.

Lifting the shape of the Davit from the drawing . The next stage was to
cut to size each davit. There are 2 pairs of davits per recess. Each
davit is made up of a left and right hand side.

Taking the strip of 2.5mmx1mm styrene , sections are cut to size that
conform to the shape of the davit , these separate the two sides and
as in the real davit form part of the slide for the boat.




Each of the davits are temporarily set in to place with in the recess.

To help in giving a better seating for each set of davits a strip is placed
on the base .

Four sets of Davits in place and they fit!

Now for fitting out the interior.

Moving on to the interior detail .
The centre separating bulkhead wall is fitted each side with vertical
strengthening strips and the first of a number of platform walkways .

More of the walkways are added to the rear bulkhead

One of the platform walkways being made up from 1mm thick styrene sheet.
An outer rail support is added using 2mm by .50mm Evergreen strip

PE four bar rails are added to the platform walkway

PE three bar rail is added to the rear bulkhead platform walkway .

The boat bay is placed into position three views



The next stage is to fit the remainder of the detail. Which consists of piping ,
vents, boxes which can only be undertaken as originally intended outside the
boat recess .

The davits are placed in position

The boat bay is once again offered into position .

The boat recess takes form .

With the advantage of a removable boat bay, rigging the davits and
fitting the motor boats to the davits will be a whole lot eaisier. There is
more detail to be added but the focus for next time will be Kiev's
motor boats

Hi Dave

Realy - Realy - nice.

All those little details you are putting in..
Little boxes on the bulkheads (Probably electrical boxes.)
Strengthening gussets. Handrails that are clean and crisp.
Lovely watertight doors.
Not always easy to see but they are there.
These are the things that put a model right up there, above all others.

A great thing you also do is to show us all how to do it with your very informative (How To) photographs.
