Since this is a post in CASF, it needs to be put as a reply in one of the existing class-based threads. To which carrier does your post refer?

Hi, I noticed that someone on this site said the 1800 modern CVN-65 island is the right size for the revell 1/720 CVN-65. Is that accurate? if so I want to do it, also, is the old style Island on the kit too small? Im fine with using either, I just want to use which one is more accurate to scale...

I have tried that. It is a little small looking on a 1/720 Enterprise. I even tried to use the 1/800 island as a pattern to scratch a 1/720 island in an attempt tp upgrade the revell kit. That did not work out very well and teh Dragon kit was announced. I got all excited about the new 1/700 kit but it has yet to show up.

Maybe we can talk one of our talented resin vendors to do an upgrade kit once the 1/700 kit makes its appearance....

If I get a chance, I'm going to measure the dimensions of the Revell island, and compare them with the 1/800 kit's. The island superstructures for ALL of the supercarrier kits in 1/800 scale just plain look oversized - perhaps not enough for 1/700, but there's only one way to be sure...

Not sure if it has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread...but someone scratch-built a 1/72 Enterprise, and it is OUTSTANDING.

Hey Kevin,
There is a company called GHQ miniature wargaming that sells a bomb and missiles assortment. click the link http://www.ghqmodels.com/store/ac28.html which should take you directly there. They are 1/285 scale, which is a little oversized for 1/350 which some modelers may cringe at using, but there are some that are useable and look good once painted and installed. I don't know if these are the ones you were looking for but it's worth a look.

Hey guys,

First, let me preface by saying this: You guys are great! This thread is a veritable treasure trove of information!

I'm going to start on a Big-E build in a few weeks (after my 48 scale A-6 is done) and I'm assembling a binder (read: "target folder") for my build. This kit is 30 years in the making and I really want it to turn out as good as my skills will allow. The hobby shop my dad and I went to as a kid had a 1/350 Enterprise in it and I've wanted one ever since; now that I'm 35 and conveniently have my own income I've decided to make it a reality. I'm building the Tamiya 1/350 and I'm debating between a Gulf War I and a more modern build and I'm trying to get a feel for how much scratch building is involved if I decide to go with the more modern build. Can anyone confirm exactly how much- and what- would need to be scratch built if I go with the modern build? Also does anyone know of any decal sheets for the most modern air wing?

As far as the Gulf War I build goes, can anyone recommend which PE/resin updates/decal sets are worth the scratch? I thought I had a good feel for all of this and as I keep reading I keep finding new ways to turn this into a 5-year, wife-alienating-and-celibacy-ensuring project and it would be nice to trim it down to just the upgrades that really make a difference.

Any help you guys can offer would be awesome!

I am currently in the process of building and updating the 1/350 Tamiya Enterprise for the 2001 timeframe. viewtopic.php?f=59&t=120496 I guess as far as your question as to how much scratch building is needed really depends on how far you want to go with it, which makes it difficult for anyone to answer that. I can tell you that my aspirations for my 2001 timeframe build have me adding a ton of detail that is not included with the kit. Mainly a hangar deck, which of course has to be completely scratch built. As far as Enterprise and the first Gulf War in 1991, CVN-65 was in dry dock from December 1990 to September 1994 and missed any activity in the war.

As far as photo etch and decals are concerned, I have included a few links for you to check out that may help you decide. I hadn't seen anything like this before with links all in one spot, which would have saved me a lot of time back when I started all my research to see what aftermarket products were available. These are only a few that I remembered and most of these I had purchased for my build. Hope this helps.

Hey Doug,

Thanks a ton, man! I was just checking out your Enterprise build... I've checked out a lot of E builds while researching and wow... never seen anything like that. Your EA-6Bs look better than the 48 scale aircraft I build (and how cool are the tail markings on those birds?!) Whatever I do with my build, it's not going to compare to that - kudos! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your reference photos for the 2001 era ship? Also, do you think the PE elevators are worth the $35 bucks?

I appreciate the comments regarding my build, thanks a bunch. In regards to you other questions, most of my photos came from searching the internet and I also bought a photo CD from this link: http://www.stillmotionsphotographics.co ... earchTerm= This site (ModelWarships) is also a great resource for information as well. As for your other question in regards to the photo etch perforated elevators, unless you are doing an older version of the Enterprise, all of these perforated elevators were replaced with solid decking in the 1990's. I believe there is more information earlier in this thread on this subject. So if you are going to build a later Enterprise, specifically after this time period, then don't bother with them. However, if you have decided to build an earlier Enterprise, the photo etch elevators are very nice and are worth the purchase. Hope this helps. Good luck on your build.

Too true Doug. I believe they were replaced in pairs in the late 90's. Starfighter decals last intruder cruise (1996) will allow perforated elevators with all the domes etc.

For the scratch builder here, it's worth noting that the Kit supplied elevators actually represent the perforated ones and don't look right for a latter fit

Hi Guys,
I've had Tamiya`s 1/350 Enterprise in my stash for the last 20 years, finally going to build it.
The forum has proven a wealth of info, and I'm slowly working though the old posts.
I'm more of an "Aircraft Guy" so initially I was concentrating more on the 1996 air wing than worrying about the ship.
However after looking at some of your posts with the work you guys are turning out it has inspired me to up my game.
Doug - you are a mad man, your current build is crazy! I don't think I'll go to that extent, but I will be following your work.
Tried to find a supplier for Ray Bean's photo CD, but have been unsuccessful, WEM is backordered, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried stillmotion directly? You can not "click and buy" it from ray's site, you have to e mail him, and he will send you a paypal invoice.

I emailed ray regarding a CD but he was unable to deal with individual sales (Health problems etc)
Freetime have some In stock though.
