Hey John -

Looks really good! Which manufacturer kit is this? I have not seen a Kang Ding FFG model yet and would love to build one, but can't find a kit manufacturer...

Here are some photos of a couple of upgraded Ticonderoga class CGs. The upgrade consists in the replacement of the Phallanx CIWS with RAM launchers.

I am building Dragon's Normandy kit as Ticonderoga (using the optional early parts included in the kit) as she appeared as built. My question: was she fitted with CIWS as built?

Nektarios: Good build! Did you scratchbuild the RAM launchers? Where did you get the idea for this transformation?
I think the two black stripes on the heli deck disapeared after the first batch. Did you not get the good decals with your model?

Here s a photo of the commisioning ceremony. The CIWS is there.

Thanks arnobiz. The RAM launchers are from JAG. The idea wasn t mine. Some years ago the U.S. Navy considered the upgrade of its Ticonderoga Class cruisers with Searam. I just Used RAM instead of Searam.

The two black stripes are supposed to represent (if i m not wrong) the RAST system which was not fitted to the first 2 ships of the class. That is why CG-47 and CG-48 couldn t handle the SH-60. The decals didn t have this stripe so i added it
using an aftermarket decal set. I hope i didn t add something i wasn t supposed to.

Oh I see the black stripes represent rails, not paint
It is weird they are not included in the latest Dragon models then, given they got brand new decal sets from Cartograf...

I will probably scribe them on my Tico's and highlight with pencil.

Or you could use aftermarket black stripe.

Not really as it is clear on the picture that:
1)The rails are more dark grey than black
2)the white markings cover the rails, not the contrary (Which can be dealt with simply applying the dark strips before the white markings though)

I think I will engrave the rails and paint them in really dark grey before I apply the decals on my CG-62, thanks for the help guys

Is it based in an actual update proyect, or is just a "what if" ?

I know that Australia is upgrading their OHPs with an 8 cell Sea Sparrow VLS forward of where the MK 13 launcher was. Haven't heard what the US plans to do other than rumers of removing the 76mm gun as well as the Mk 13 launcher, completely removing the OHPs offensive capabilities. What Nektarios added with the RAM and VLS would be a wonderfull addition to this class, as long as the VLS can handle more than Sea Sparrows.

Nektarios, how do you build so many ships and to such detail. I need to know your secret.

I was inspired by the Australian upgrade but wanted to add more firepower to the OHP class. The VLS can launch also VL ASROC Standard SM-2 and Tomahawk or VL Harpoon Block II so the conversion i ve made could serve as an interim littoral combat ship. that is why i also added a RAM launcher fore of the VLS.

There is no real secret. The only small trick i use to increase the rate of my building is bulding several ships of a class at once which saves a lot of time.

That is a great design! I hope the "powers that be" take note of this, and the OHP is a wonderful platform.

Slightly off topic; Nektarios, how did you create the VLS cells? Was it a kit bash, or scratch built?

I used the VLS launcher from the Takanami (DD-110) Aoshima kit.
