At the head of the main jib is a swinging arm for the upper purchase
block or sheave .
This is made up by soldering 0.4 mm brass wire to the shape shown

The swinging arm has a fulcrum point which coincides with the block at the
jib head. Seen here is the purchase block being assembled and is made
using PE wheels and litho for each of the grit guards.

Next and final parts of the crane build are folding support arms for the pulley
frame

Hi Peter thanks for your kind comments . When the crane is finally constructed It will , like the rest of the model await a coat of paint . But the real difficult bit comes in the rigging . I haven't quite figured it out as to were the various cables go. Thankfully all the moving bits can be removed.

Next the support arms for the pulley frame . These two arms are fold down
to allow the frame to drop backwards. This photo shows the parts of one
support.

Both supports are made up of brass tube with the lower section having and
insert thus.

The purpose of the insert is to allow the lower support arms to be secured
into the base.

The upper supports are fitted to the underside of the pulley arm frame.

The competed crane ready for painting { later on} and rigging { a more
difficult procedure}

The second crane that Kiev carries is outboard of the superstructure .
As no drawings exist showing any real detail the imperative was to
set to and sketch up a drawing , commencing with the tubular sides .

As the crane is constructed of steel tube then the material of choice was
1mm od brass tube for the outer sections with 0.5mm brass wire for the
inner cross bracings .

The next stage was to trace the sketch onto the soldering board which
is now the pattern for the side frames . The 1mm tube is cut to size and
shaped as per the sketch and placed on the pattern . The top end frame
of the purchase on the full size crane is detachable . For the model this
will be soldered up as one. Each of the cross bracings , vertical and
diagonal are added

Once soldered the first side frame is removed from the soldering board

This process is then repeated producing two identical side frames.

The next job is to solder up the top and lower bracings .

With the two side frames soldered the next stage is to construct a
wood profile/jig that will allow the frame to be soldered in situ. First it
becomes necessary to draw the bracing arrangement as seen on the
upper part of the jib.

A tracing is made. Which will be transferred to the timber that will form the profile.

The timber Profile or jig will allow the top and lower cross bracings to be
soldered into place. This is actually made up of three profiles, upper, left and
right hand sides. And very importantly the entire profile/jig will have to be
removable once the framework of the jib is soldered up.

The entire profile/jig is prepared. The three components of the profile are
bonded using impact or epoxy adhesive and sanded down to remove any
rough edges .

Your work is a true inspiration. I have gone back over the build and am very impressed with the work. Seeing you build the radar structures and cranes makes it look easy. I have been inspired to attempt to scratch an AN/SPS 12 radar for my Assiniboine this weekend.
These build posts for all the various builds are an excellent source of knowledge.

Now that the profile/jig is made, the location for each cross and diagonal
bracing is marked onto the top of the profile. Following this each jib side
frames can be attached to the profile thus.

Using 0.5mm brass wire the cross brace can be cut to size and place on
to each of the pre-positioned marks.

All the cross bracings are held secure by the simple expedient of Scotts tape
and soldering can begin.

Generally I�ll try to ensure than each section to be soldered is a GOOD butt
fit and tinned .

Each of the longitudinal and diagonal TOP bracings are measured, cut to
size and placed in position. These are then removed, tinned and reset.

All these bracings are then soldered into place.

.
Next time the tricky bit , removing the profile and repeating the whole
procedure for the lower set of bracings. But does it survive ? find out on Monday .
