I don't use Humbrol, so can't give any recommendations there. For gloss coat, I use Future Floor Finish - it's sold under a variety of labels and brands around the world, but this site gives you some idea: http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html

For flat coats, I've been using artists' matte varnish lately. I use an acrylic one by Liquitex - it's rather thick, but self-levels.

These products tend to be cheaper and just as (if not more) effective than the hobby-specific products.

The only decal softening agent I've used is MicroScale's Micro Sol, which works as long as your decals are not covered by any coating. I don't know if that's what Humbrol's decalfix is, though.

Really thanks Timmt. One more thing: do you apply matt coat with airbrush to the whole submarine or by paintbrush just in the area of decals on and around) ? And happy Easter to everybody.

In theory, you should have applied the gloss coat to the entire ship, and so you should have to apply the matte coat to the entire ship as well. Otherwise, you might get some inconsistency in the coating finish. However, I've had some success with dipping the decal into the gloss coat and applying it that way without putting gloss on the whole ship, and then brushing on matte coat only on the shiny decal. Haven't really done it enough to say whether it'll always work, though.

Well hope this time HB wont dissapoint us with another Akula fiasco.
A friend of mine examined the pictures and said it resembles one of the early ?yphoon class SSBNs.
Lets see what out forum experts say.

It's hard to tell from those photos, but I'd say the accuracy is consistent with HB's other submarines model, which is to say that the general shape is right, but many of the details are wrong. The biggest error I can see is the flat portion of the deck around the bulge of the sail pressure hull. It's too far forward. Also, I don't think the Typhoons have substantial keels like the one on the bottom of the model. Well, at least it's better than the Dragon Typhoon.

I noted this elsewhere: the new HB kit is lacking the fairing that blends the leading edges of the sternplanes with the main hull.

Patman,

Those drawings are ok, but not great. These are the best ones I've found:

Timmy,

I don't think the lack of towed sonar array fairings is that big of a deal. Firstly, I don't think that the early Typhoons had them in the first place. The later ones definitely do, and they were probably retrofitted to the early units at some time. Secondly, I don't think it would be all that difficult to scratch-build the fairing. It looks like all you would need is some sheet styrene and a fair bit of putty. The position of the widened portion of the flat deck around the sail is a real problem though.

Amen to that! And to the kit...

And you also mentioned that strange plug on the bottom and finally I will add the anhecoic tiling...

Again, as said elsewhere, what a disappointment!

Uuuuhh, guys, in terms of fundamental errors in the kit, I think you missed a big one. The Akula (Typhoon) carried 20 RSM-52 SLBMs in 20 missile tubes. Count the number of missile tubes on the photo of the kit above....

And what about the Golf sub, any word?

Wow, how did I miss that. Unless there are significant corrections to this kit, I can't see wasting time on it.

I built an Alanger Typhoon a few years ago; a bit short on details, but at least they got the hull shape right (yes, I know the length is off) and the right number of missile tubes!

I have the Typhoon displayed on the overhead bins in my cubicle at work. The people who were START Treaty inspectors like it (Note: they are missile & warhead counters, not rivet counters).

Wow!

Thanks Tom!

Indeed I was so bothered by the big plug on the bottom, the engraved anhecoic tiling and the lip in front of the sail that I did not even look at it!

Does anyone have interior plans for the Project 945 Sierra boats? I'm writing an article for the Naval Institute Proceedings about the pod on Soviet SSNs, and I have plans for the Victor III and Akula, but none for the Sierra. Thanks!
