Well the two sides and top of the jib did survive being removed from the profile.

Next step is to compete the underside of the jib frame work . But first the
underside of the profile was back filled with filler paste thus and sanded down
smooth .

The three sided jib frame work was re-placed over the profile, making sure
that the sides of the lower edges of the frame work are seated ABOVE the
edge of the profile. This will allow each of the bottom set of bracings to be
soldered into place.

With the frame for the jib re-set the cross bracing can be added .

These are now soldered up.

More soldering to follow with the longitudinal bracings then the all important ,
�proof of the pudding� can the profile be removed from the
completed framework?

The longitudinal bracings are soldered into place as per the top .

The moment of truth ! The profile is eased from the frame of the jib.

All in one piece and ready to be cleaned up.


Next building up the crane.

The photo of the jig looked to be showing a bit of whaleback/reverse sheer....

A Hint if I may for all?:
A little bit of "Cillit Bang" left on that for a few moments and then rinsed off with hot water leaves it all shiny and flux free.

just a mind-blowing build. xo-llent build Dave.

Dave you have some great ideas here with your Kiev build. It makes me wonder if I will ever get as far with my Admiral Kuznetsov.
I guess all I have to do is one step at a time in the end I will get there. (I hope!)
When you take it to the water are there any ships on the water of similar scale in your area when you go? Would make an interesting photo of a mini fleet.
Keep going with your ideas, I'm learning heaps.

Hi Mick saddly no one locally is building or for that matter built a model at 1:144 scale which is the scale of the Kiev. If it were 1:96 that indeed would be very different. So in one sense I'll be on my own. When Kiev was launched I sailed with ARH but Duane of course is 1:72 and now 1:72 in the UK is getting more popular especially in Scotland. The problems of transport would be just to much for me if Kiev was at 1:72

Dave I have one question that is starting to bug me?? What scale is your ship? In the title is says 1/96 and later you talk to 1/144.
As for Scale 1/72. I fully understand what your on about since that's the scale of my ship. As for transport, did you see my model on my car? Sometime soon I plan a trip to Wagga to match up with the Kiev there, that's a 6 hour drive one way.

Hi Mick For some unknown reason { Cadman please Help} the header for this thread reads 1:96 . If it were that scale I'd never be able to get the beast in my wee shed, I call it a workshop but in reality it's still a shed. Kiev is to a scale of 1:144 , still a big model but much more manageable . Chris Rogers from Brisbane { building Invincible at 1:72 ,sails with the Wagga group} visited me last week just as the Illustrious was visiting Liverpool.
