Hi guys

well... a start has been made on the Axis models 1/350 Roma

I have waterlined it!--considering the sheer quuantity of resin involved in the lower hull it was quite a task

It will be a wee while before tangible progress I actually made--but I have been researching the heck out of her!

I have bought the Barbieri 1:00 scale plans, the Photo CD from Milan as well as a picture CD from Giampiero of Regia Marina.

Hi Jim, I've seen that History channel has a wonderful monographic documentary about the Roma, in Italy will be transmitted on 30 March ( don't know if will be the same in England ), can't wait to watch it.

Was it ever conclusively shown that the Regia Marina used the green anti-fouling coating? It so, what years and what shades?

RM Battleships

Hi,

I have just been wandering through these wonderful postings. It occurred to me, as Trumpeter seem intent on building both the battleships and carriers of the World, what are the chances of any WW2 Italian battleships being built? Anybody heard any whispers, or otherwise. I don't think I could handle a resin of this size, but needless to say a plastic injection number, well I couldn't resist the challenge.

The WW2 cruisers and destroyers of the RM would also be good subjects, but moving on a bit further, does anybody know of plastic injection models (particularly warships) being produced currently in Italy?

The two (current) Italian plastic kit manufacturers I know of are Italeri and Tauro. Italeri seem to be concentrating on 1/35 small craft, although they announced a 1/72 Italian torpedo boat last year.
Tauro haven't produced any new moulds in a while, but their 1/400 Zara-class cruisers are still in production. There's a review of their Fiume kit on my webpage. Trumpeter/MHM scaled up the Tauro Pola for their 1/350 kit.

Hi Guys-as promised--here is the Roma building in its infancy

Basically--without instructions -- lots of time spent just looking at the bits- and pics of the real thing....-and there are a lot of them.

This photo shows mainly my incredibly clear workbench...--and the behemoth of resin that is the ROMA

And already some modifications....

The platform here is aft of the funnel--and the splintershields should have a partially rolled top.

I achieved this by gluing fine wire on the outside-and then paring away the resin on the inside at an angle--it gave a pleasing effect which looks about like the real thing!

At last--a 1/350 Roma is a-happening!!

progress on model is good so far-mainly clean up and research.


been keeping a reasoable photo record--it will be quite some article when its done!!


BUT... guys!! what is the significance /purposeof the truck and car on deck--this sis seen in most plans and also on the famous Barbieri model

Any ideas?

I no longer have the references at my fingertips, but there were indeed two kinds of anti-fouling compounds, each based on different metals, that were used. I don't believe it was as broadly based as years and shades, but of the specific yard a ship came from, as to whether or not it carried non-red-oxide antifouling. IIRC, the alternate compound was used much more by one yard, than the others (if the others used it at all).

I researched this subject some time ago, as I was interested in finding out which RM ships were coated with the green compound; it was never a question for me whether or not it existed, once I determined there were two different compounds used by Italian yards.

I'll pm you if and when I can dig it back up, ok? :thumbs_up_1:

Well chaps--Sorry I have been keeping a low profile...

But Roma IS making good progress- I have been puzzling certain aspects--but overall it will be a beauty once done...--but as one who has recently been building 6in long pre-dred battleships in 1/700 it certainly IS a monster of a ship!"

I will post a pic or three soonish.#
