Surprisingly these vents weren't destroyed in the sinking (at least on the Starboard side) and are still visible on the wreck. You can see them here in these two video's.

I also have a period photo of these Starboard S2 vents that I can put up if you'd like. I'm actually unsure if they were present on both sides of the ship. I'll take a look through some wreck video and see if I can find evidence of them on the Port side.

Edit: Here they are on the Port. And it looks like they may be in a slightly different configuration than those on the Starboard side

Thanks Dana! The AOTS book shows them from above but no side profile. These will be perfect!

According to the Kaiser books those vents were a later alteration dating from the second refit. Before they added those upright ducts, they had grille openings w/ shutters on the curved wall (called Redoute). Does the model feature the grille openings instead? My kit is tidied away, on the attic, can't look at it right now...

No nothing at all. It's flush like the after recesses. Grills would be easier well a bit of plastic card should do fine.

Here is a picture of the stunning model of Josef Kaiser, showing the vents which were installed during the 2nd Werftliegezeit. Hope it helps.

AHHH! I see them now My mind was stuck on "square holes in walls with louvers" Duh.
(not to mention I wouldn't know a 15cm gun if it bit me on the rump. lol)

some playing with PE and paint! Have added the main vents around both fore and aft barbettes, plus the larger deck vents fore and aft.

On the last photo of the vents on the Bruno barbette, some paint has annoyingly clogged up so I'll have to clean them up. Didn't notice till I took photos! Damnit

That's exactly what I was seeing!!

Sometimes these pictures require a simple circle drawn in paint to show exactly what it is we're talking about!!

I have to say I love adding the breakwater to the bows on models. They all of a sudden look more like a ship!

In Perth so only 8 hrs in front of the UK.

On annual leave so I post and build when I get the chance, usually when it's too hot to do the house repairs hahaha.

I'm thinking of having the port catapult extended and having an Arado made ready for launching, with the stbd catapult secured.

only thing is... the catapult is perfect now for the Bismarck in 1940....




A walkway either side of the catapult was added in 1941. The kit and KA both have not supplied these at all. Luckily as I haven't used any of the kit's PE walkways or stantion, I should be able to modify some to create these.

During the start the catapult was extend very quickly and the cradle was moved along the catapult runway with steel cables by the catapult itself. So the very short catapult runway was made longer.

Thanks Nilsson, I'm aware of this which is why if I have the port catapult extended I want to have an Arado mounted. I won't fix these down until further down the track as there is still a lot of work to do with this area.

This following pic, while titled Bismarck is actually the tirpitz. You can tell by the fact the crane is on the same deck as the catapult - but shows what I have in mind for one of the arado planes and the catapult.

Just one thing about that ramp. After this came up in another thread, about the complex curvatures and slopes in that area, I had a look at JK's model book again. The following is his solution...

Edit: After a second look, the two ends of the catwalks seem to be at different heights. The green slope down ends at blue level, then comes the step, and the outer end is roughly at the level of the lower edge of the catapult. On the other side, towards the main hangar, the blue level seems to be correct (half way up the height of the catapult).
