Hi Martin:

It's nice to see you back on this and making progress. I know how difficult it can be to re do something that was done and painstakingly so. Your "cat astrophy" and my moving fiasco. It takes the mojo away. I look at other builds and think the same thing as you, why do I bother or I can't seem to do that kind of work. I look at others work as a motivator and a standard to try to achieve. I think your work is noteworthy and the effort you are putting into it is paying off with an interesting model of a concept that almost was. Keep up the good work, in the end you will have yourself a unique model to be proud of. Scratchbuilding isn't for sissy's nor is making lattice masts. I like it.

Looking good, Martin! Keep us updated. I've really developed an affinity for those big inter-war battlecruisers.

A little more progress. I am replacing most of the boats with boats from a donor Trumpeter Colorado, same kit that gave up it's main battery turrets and some other parts.

I've gotten the boats stacked, resting on strips of plastic, with little "chocks" of evergreen strip, to keep them straight. I see from the f**king magic of digital macro photography that they need a little touch up too. When that's done, I'll "tie" them down, something I didn't do the first time around. I also repaired the forward cage mast (I had manage to knock some pieces off - something I excel at). The mast needs to be painted again, before it can be mounted to the ship. I removed the aft cage mast, because, under the category of "lack of planning", I had attached it before adding the various yards and masts, along with the gaff for the ensign. This, too, needs some touch up before being attached to the model.

I'm probably going to hold off placing either cage mast on the model until I re-rail the model. Otherwise, my luck, I'll be breaking parts off right and left.

Disaster struck this build, once again. I'm convinced it's cursed. I had the forward cage mast held in a tweezer while awaiting final airbrushing. Unfortunately the tweezer snapped the mast. When I picked it up, the spotting top popped off the mast and hit the floor, bending one piece of photo-etching and knocking off another, which I can't find on the floor. This is the second custom order forward cage mast that 3D model parts made for me. I'm not doing a third. I'm relegating this to the shelf of doom, probably forever. I glued the aft cage mast onto the model, even though it's not done, just so it would not rattle around.

I'm totally disgusted. This sh*t completely takes the joy out of the hobby.

Well maybe you could try a post Pearl Harbor Rebuild. If i could find a second IHP Lexington kit I would do that myself.

My cat nightmare was when I was in high school I build a Revell USS Kearsarge kit. I finally got it fully rigged and completed. I came into the family room to see my cat eating the ratlines and rigging string. As I yelled at him he leaped and knocked the kit off the fireplace mantle destroying the masts. My mom actually was very annoyed since she really liked how nice it looked before Pete the cat sank it. I build one again around ten years ago with Steve Nuttall brass canons and it brought back many memories.
