I think they deck looks great

Small update, I attacked the deck markings today and I think I will call it good save for the final washes.




Not perfect but in the ballpark I feel. No two pictures seem to show them alike






I snapped the foremast off while taking it out of it's case

I have been slowly plugging away at this build, and even slower at updating this thread. I hope to do some catching up as my deadline of April 23rd is fast approaching.

I wanted to depict her on the Morning of the 13th of November around the time that she sent her Torpedo Bombers and some of her fighters to Henderson Field, and in the interim put the finishing touch to Hiei. The Big E was damaged a few weeks prior and her forward elevator was not operating, so she set sail with 59 Officers and Men from the Vestal to continue repair work so that the carrier could get back into the fight. There are no known images of what this process looked like, so I winged it and came up with this;




The figures are not highly detailed as the will lurk in the shadows once the flight deck is permanently attached. But it adds a little visual interest.

I also pretty much finished the focsle except for final painting, we see here the E's last Chicago Piano ready to ward off marauding attackers.




This was the Kits 1.1 with some WEM PE for sights and seats.

I have also finished the island now except for final painting, rigging and weathering.





All kit parts except for figures and 20mm's, the later was 3D Modelparts

I am now on to the flightdeck,I noticed this interesting choice to reusing the Yorktown's deck,


We see here the deck and mounting foundation for the 2nd AA gun platform. The deck has a raised locator that works for the Big E up until the 40mm's were fitted.The Deckhouse and tub are accurate for the time being depicted.


The instructions simply instruct you to remove that locator


Here we see the underside of the deck


Here is a visualization of the minimum amount that needs to removed to allow the Deckhouse to fit. Going to take some interesting sanding and cutting to blend that into the deck. This kit has so many great things about it, but everyonce and while you come across something that just leaves you going

I love the weathering as well as the colors you gave...they look nice and realistic.

I'll try to put some thoughts about your weathering techniques on my November 1944 Tirpitz, though I don't have any kind of wash at present.

It's alive...... it's alive....... It Is Alive!!! Ok, maybe too many old horror movies lately

But the Big E is slowly churning ahead. The ship herself is basically done,now it's guns and details.


The PE Degaussing cables wouldn't work as the Port side was done in reverse and would show flat side out vs etched cables. I just did some styrene rod to show this feature.



I had to scratchbuild the Mk 51 director tub because the kit's went MIA on me

Tom's Modelworks USS Hornet set help supplement the kits PE


Gonna push hard to have her done by 9/24 and OMS show. Wish me luck!!

Looks great Matt. Sound like you have had a few interesting issues with the build but have adapted well. Are those the 3D 20mm guns?

Excellent work. One unsolicited piece of advice - don't push to get her done for the show. It's the last push when we rush that bad sh*t happens. There will be other model shows. Just my two cents...

Glad to see ya back at it. She looks great! Been taking notes down in the instruction booklet for my own build when I get to it. Can't wait to see her finished.
