Hello All,

Hey Robin, please do tell more.

I was aboard DDG-22 for two WESPACS to Yankee station.
Among other things, we did some very unusual nite ops up
north. I may have hinted a few of them to Tony. Nothing
about them appears in any public USS Benjamin Stoddert
history.

Always like to read a good sea story.

Robin should tell this Whale of a Tale! The CO was supposedly relieved before the line handlers had secured when the ship moored in Yokosuka.

I wasn`t aboard TOWERS, but a buddy was in CIC at the time.

Yep the CO was relieved before the line handlers had secured the ship. The brow was put down very quickly. What's your buddy's name I may know him. For everyone else the quick down and dirty is the Towers had a gunex to fire off some 5" rounds. The range was foul because of the coast guard ship in the area. Co said shoot! So, the ship shot! In a classic stradle pattern. The rounds stradled the japanese ship preflectly, except I am pretty should the ship was not hit. But I think you all can see the problem. Like I said Its been a numbers years now and I can't remember all the details. But thats the down and diry of it.

Thanks for the story. If one of the DDG Fans were to do a dio of this encounter, what would it be entitled?
Would it be, "Oops"?
Would it be, "Captain, you missed the target"?
Perhaps, "No damage done.."?
Or, should we stick with, "The Great Sagami Bay Gunshoot"?
How many rounds were expended during this mishap?
What was the distance from target?
How about IFF?
Was there a real threat not recognized?
Was there a formal apology?

I went to the website. There was a very nice WWI -ish battlecruiser. Was there something more that I could not find?
Nice battle cruiser....looks like an RC model.

Just received the 1/350 kit of the Stoddard yesterday from WEM. Can�t wait to get going on it. The old Benny was my first ship and I plan on building her in the year 1977. That�s the year I reported onboard for duty.

I have studied DDG-22, and I have a mound of pics to share.
Definitely used this link for research....

1977 huh? I wonder if that's before or after these changes were made.
1) Removal of 01 level vertrep platform side extensions.
2) Yardarm arrangement on both the foremast and aft funnel.
3) Encapsulated life raft cannisters or the "basket and bag" type.
4) non-skid arrangement on decks....
5) Ships decorations....
6) IFF antenna or not mounted atop the SPS-39/52 system.
7) Find out what year the second sonar dome was installed.
I am sure of this...
1) Only one "bugeye" on Mt's 51 and 52.
2) 01 aft unrep station used the lattice type platform. "H" with crossbraces.
3) For 1/350 scale and 1/700 scale FS36270 2 parts to 1 part White.

Please post progress pics here of your DDG-22 build....

Tony,
1. Already gone by the time I got onboard.
2. Will be using my 78-79 Westpac Cruise book!
3. Had the "basket and bag" type when I reported aboard, but changed out in a yard period before the next cruise.
4. Pictures from the cruise book will show this.

7. ? As far I as I know she only had the bow mounted one. I saw her in dry dock.

If I can somehow load up pictures from my cruise book I can share with everyone. Just not sure how to do that.

Hi, I built the WEM Aussie DDG kit some years ago. Nice kit overall. I built her as HMAS Hobart for an ex crewman who wanted her as she appeared in the early '80s. I've posted photos of the kit through her buildup with all the modifications I had to do on my web site. I also have about 50 pics of HMAS Perth on her last visit to Melbourne before she was decommissioned.
