Admiral King ordered a "fire to exhaustion" test with one of the 14-inch ships to see if the arrangements were still sufficient. The result was the vast majority of 250 12-gun salvos were fired on time and the magazines were completely emptied by the crews on duty without difficulty.

A full magazine would only give her enough ammunition for about 100 12-gun solvos.
