Tks JIm! Tug's Club!

I redesigned the steering wheel to be more realistic.

Drawing of the rear capstan, the towing bollards, letters of the name.

Another type of capstan not quite the same.

The word "delicious" comes to mind, but I don't know exactly why. The 3D effect makes it look "tasty", I guess.

I will be including a Woban class in my diorama and was wondering if US Navy sailors operated these tugs in the early 1950's or if they were civilians?

I don't know about the 50's but I was assigned as a deck hand on some of these tugs in the mid-late 60's and it was a Navy crew. I would expect they were Navy Crews?

Many served in the navy until the 1970s, then in civilian life. A beautiful longevity and career. Simple and robust ships.

I reduced the size of some parts on the rear after analysing photos.

Drawing of the rear steel grating, which has a lot of holes.

Drawing of the hatch of the aft store room where the spare tow lines and hawsers were probably stored. Note that this room is called a "lazarette" in English, a term I did not know. Not very common anymore, perhaps.

The hatch is not very well placed on the manoeuvring platform, there is no better way to catch your feet or the trailer/ships. Rollers have been added to avoid this problem.
Lazarette

Wikipedia

The lazarette (also spelled lazaret ) of a boat is an area near or behind the cockpit . The word is similar to and probably derived from lazarette . The lazarette is usually a storage locker used for materials or equipment that a sailor or boatswain would use around the decks of a sailing vessel.

It is usually located below the weather deck at the stern of the vessel and is accessible through a cargo hatch (if accessible from the main deck) or a door (if accessible from the lower decks). The equipment usually stored in a lazarette would be spare lines, sails, sail repairs, line and cable splicing repair equipment, fenders, a mast chair, spare blocks, tools and other equipment.

The name derives from the biblical story of Saint Lazarus, who in Christian belief was raised from the dead by Jesus.

On old square-rigged sailing ships, it was located at the stern of the ship. The original purpose was to store the bodies of passengers or important crew members who had died during the voyage.

Today's progress.

I redrew the front bulwark at the bow because it was not in accordance with reality. The photos help a lot. It's right now.

Added the windlass/cabstan controls forward and aft, the two skylights, the aft one opens into the galley.

I have drawn the 6 fairleads and the aft bulwark ports (water drainage on deck)

Looking very nice. The research on these is quite interesting. I agree the bow bulwark area looks much better, a little fuller? The bow bumper of heavy rope as usually fitted has always been a hallmark of harbor tugs, possibly a difficult item to do 3D design for?

Best regards: Tom

Yes Tom, the bow pudding is difficult to model in 3D, it can be ridiculous.

What is the final goal / intent for all of this wonderful 3D designing? I forget, or never knew, and can't find it if it was already mentioned. :wave_1:

Thanks!

The goal on this new one is to print this tug at 1:350 waterline for a friend, he is doing a diorama, and at 1:100 for myself.

Here are my latest projects:

SS Hydrograff at 1:100:

Olympic Bravery tanker at 1/700, not finished:

Impressive!!

I have been missing out and overlooking these great projects! :doh_1:

This tug boat, however, is more up my slipway than the others.

The humorous cartoon above reminds me of a children's book from the 1940's called "Little Toot" about a toy tugboat starting out in a small brook and escaping his little boy and taking an adventurous voyage all the way to the sea.

There would be possibility of hand knotting one, a daunting and tedious effort. I hand knotted exactly one disembarkation net for the APA. It looked nice but the effort to complete the whole set was not time effective. Good examples!

I sculpted the one on my Hatak (1/350) with Testors putty. A little delicate an fragile, though. Especially the side fenders. Should have used MilliPut or something else.

Actually, it was clay and not Testors putty. Thanks for the reminder Fliger747. It was a while back.

That's one way to do it, I sculpted the bloomers for Alaska from clay.

Cheers: Tom

Today I did some of the navigation lights, the bridge mast, and the lifeboat, a recycle from a previous project, which saved me some time.

I'll see if I can cover it with its canopy or not. I could add 2 oars.

The navigation lights are placed on the "upper bridge", but this was not always the case, on some, they were fixed to the railing in front of the bridge doors.

Today's "Azimuth compasses" are no longer magnetic, at least those used on board, gyrocompass repeaters, also called taximeters, have been in use for a long time now, they indicate true north or so-called true north.

The angular difference between true north and compass north (magnetic) is called gyro variation (Wg).

Personal photo of a taximeter (Tarragona, Spain), there are 4 of them, one in the centre of the bridge and on each wing in general. Another one is placed at the helm and autopilot.

Image

Magnetic North has moved a lot and is still moving, it has never been so close to true North (since it was calculated at least).

4 centuries of tracking magnetic north:

Image

The speed of movement of the North Magnetic Pole, which was on average about 11 km per year, suddenly increased from 1985 to reach nearly 56 km / year in 2005.

Since then, the speed has been decreasing and is expected to reach 40 km/year around 2025. Or not.
