Hello from snowwhite Dortmund!

At last, first deck of my Renown is planked, so that she really starts looking like a ship. It�s been a work of approx. 12 hours, connected with an aking neck and back, but worth the pain

Next (after x-mas chaos) will be cutting planks again, consumption is vast!

your deck looks very good,how is it attached to the ships deck,what kind of glue .

Thank you foryour kind post!!!
I�ve glued the planks with water restistant white glue - a bit diluted with water:-)
My plan is as next step to prime the finished decks with a very volatile stuff called "kronengrund", to get the splints convex, and then sanding and varnishing with clear satin. should look original, as I hope. I�ll document every step with photos, hope soon!!

Here is Renown�s Xmas edition. Results are by far minor to my expectations for 2010... But things can only get faster next year
Some of the bulleyes are not really in the desired position, so some putty and drilling has to be done. Final goal is to get the ship ready for sailing next spring, as far as the very low deck level is in danger to get in contact with water...

Dear friends,

only some slow progress from the shipyard: drilled portholes at the stern and rigols glued onto the hull, in order to get Renown ready for the varnish, mounting of the bulleyes - and thus waterproof for trials...
At the other end, I continued cutting brass for the bridge platforms. Next will be the styrene housing for the bridge block. ans maybe two or three new planks to be cut^^

So keep on modelling

Hi Joachim You show part of the bridge in brass . Question what is the thickness of brass sheet ? Do you solder the joints and if so what type of soldering is used? I am following your build with interest Will you be attending the Intermodellbau ?

Hi Dave!

With the Intermodellbau located no 10 km away from my house, I should be attending once again this year - although I got the experience that less small producers do so from year to year, but more chinese trash is sold... but it�s worth while, buying books and having a look at Mr. Deans�, searching for fittings etc.

My bridgeparts are cut from 0.5 mm brass sheet that I have bought at Conrad�s. Soldering is done with a much too strong 100w iron, for smaller parts I�ll buy a less powerful one I guess. The tin I use is called silver solder, a 150 gr. bar bought a decade ago and still lasting

Just a question to you as styrene specialist: you think it makes sense covering the wooden blockhouse of the lower bridge tower with styrene? or might that problems (no durable connection, bubbles, etc.)? A friend in my german forum is just disadvising against uising that mixture. i would youse 2-k- glue or resin to stick it on...

hello joachim,renown is coming along great.most of my superstructure and stuff are balsa skinned with styrene,i use contact cement to join the pieces.it works well for me,have not had anything let go in 5 years,so i think it will hold a few decades.

That is good news, otherwise I wouldn�t know how to proceed... bridge walls from 1 mm ply is only for timber-genius as Song Jung Gun
I have only a little problem to trnaslate contact cement - do they sell it named Pattex p.ex.?? such a yellow stuff to be apply, let dry and then press on the part you want to stick??

yes that is right joachim,it is applied to both sides let dry untill it is not sticky(about 1/2 hr).a little trick to help lining thinks up put a piece of paper between the two parts so you can line things up with out having it stick where you do not want it to .this type of glue only sticks to itself. start at one end then slide the paper out pushing the parts together as you do so.

After having met Dave, Bill and Guido at the Dortmund show (and made a little prey - styrene profile...) I�d like to post some photos of the next little progress: wastewaterpipes at portside (still putty not sanded) and portholes drilled once around the hull. Work is now again interrupted for a week of holidays, but they are urgently needed;-)

Dear friends,

small progress to be announced: Renown�s hull is grey. It took me two attempts because having finished the first, the foil to prevent dust paticles came down and created intersting structures on almost entire starboard side.
Now, with dozen of clothes-pegs it rested under the ceiling and at the walls. Have a look at the results.
Next step is placement of the portholes - I only fear to have made not enough...
