Over at another site a link was posted for a Russion version of Navsource. After working my way through the Cyrillic letters I have found a page of pictures of the Admiral Panteleyev.

Some very nice photos there including another one that confirms the greater use of red/brown than the instructions would indicate.

Depends on what time and what ship you see. Sometimes they use green as a deck colour too. Mainly for the missile launchers and helicopter decks. In other pictures you can see their top decks, roof of the bridge etc. In Grey with the other decks red and main deck brown. And in yet other occasions you see the main deck being rather dark grey instead of brown.

Depends on how much money they have I guess. The red is just the primer, if the roof is coloured Grey then they've just put another layer of paint on it. Everything takes its time in the Russian Navy....

As I found when touring the Sovremmeny that visited Norfolk, VA in 1989 the deck were painted red. However, the decks were coated over with a dark gray non slip. It is a temporary coating, unlike the non-skid on US ships. It was unevenly applied and sticky when tread upon - nasty stuff. But I willing to bet that ships in the Northern Fleet have problems maintaining traditional non-skid under the extreme cold temps.

Would this mean that the main deck of the Kuznetsov would be green tto, rather than gray, as stated in the Trumpeter instructions?

And shouldn't the lower hull on the Slava-class be red, rather than black as the Trumpeter instructions say?

you know I'm your man when you're looking for dry dock pics of Russian ships. There are some Udaloy pics somewhere too, but i'm affraid they aren't best of the dry dock collection.

hi everybody! could you be so kind to tell me which model of sovremenny soviet destroyer is better? tis better trumpeter or dragon model of this ship? I prefer 1:700 size anyway.

Well, Trumpeter doesn't make a 1/700 Sovremenny, only 1/350 and 1/200.
Dragon only makes their Sovremenny in 1/700.

So it really depends on what scale you want.

The Dragon model isn't really worth much though. I'm using it for a Dio, but noticed there are quite a few mistakes in it. Certainly after building a Trumpeter 1/200 one you'll notice them. All together I doubt there is much of a choice for a Sovremenny in 1/700 though, haven't heard of any other kit.

you re right, there is no 1:700 from trumpeter, well at least you say that the general quality of dragon models is less than the trumpeter, am I right?

For this particular one, yes, according to Neptune; other releases differ, however. Sovremenny in 1/350 isn't that large; it's slightly bigger than 1/700 Iowa.

Which mistakes do you found?

There is a problem, if the latest Russian Sovremennys are to be depicted: some platforms on the deckhouse between the bridge and the funnel are missing.

The main area of mistakes is the front of the bridge. The AK-630's there are mounted WAY too high compared to the top of the Moskit launchers. In addition to that, and as a consequence of that, the structure in between the AK's is wrong too.
In addition to that, the hangar isn't right either, very undetailed and the shape isn't entirely right too, although I think that's more caused by the age of the kit.

Ah, I had overlooked those mistakes.

There is an additional problem: the number of the bridge windows: three (the early ships), two (late Russian Ships). The kit has three.

Can't get my blasted long on to work.

I am going to pick up a 1/350 Sovremenny kit later this week. Odd thing is the Udaloy class Admiral Panteleyev kit is about twice as much. The reviews on them make them out to be pretty similar in quality, size, etc. Why is the Udaloy twice the price?
